1-Man’s Opinion on Sports-Tuesday “College Football-Coaching Chaos”
“College Football Coaching Chaos”
-0-
Black Monday is just around the corner.
Massive number of college coaches who get fired, the weekend after the college season is over.
But college football has had a head start to the firing season. As of Monday night, there are 18-Division 1-jobs that are open, and we haven’t even gotten to Black Monday.
This all started in September, which was stunning, when USC ate a massive contract to fire Clay Helton, despite a (41-26) record. So AD-Mike Bohn has had a 10-week head start to find the right guy to fix a downtrodden Trojans program. That point was driven home on Saturday when UCLA put 62-points on the board in the Victory Bell celebration.
LSU reached the finish line with Ed Ogeron with the mid season decision to buyout the outspoken coach, just two years after they had that magical (15-0) season led by QB-Joe Burrow.
Florida wants to stop the bleeding with the decision to take down coach Dan Mullen after 18-months of poor play and losses, despite a pretty impressive won lost record till Covid hit.
Back in the Pac 12, it’s been a bloody couple of weeks. Washington is reeling and took out Jimmy Lake in the aftermath of a couple of sideline confrontations with his players during games.
Washington State, in the middle of a lawsuit over Covid vaccinations, dumped defiant coach Nick Rolovich.
Virginia Tech reached the end of the line with Julian Fuentes after years of .500-football, far from what the Hokies had during the Frank Beamer days.
TCU shocked everyone by axing Gary Patterson despite a decade of really good Horned Frog football.
Texas Tech pink-slipped Matt Wells after back to back bad seasons.
Add in 10-more firings at Division 1AA-schools, from Idaho to U-Conn and U-Mass to Florida International.
Three interesting names have been hired already. Helton reached a buyout at USC to take the Georgia Southern job.
Don Brown is leaving the University of Arizona as defensive coordiantor to go home and take the U-Mass job.
And Jim Mora, popular at UCLA, and a former NFL assistant, took the U-Conn Huskies job.
Who goes where to fill these jobs?
Is there an Urban Meyer sighting, since his first year in the NFL has been a mess?
Does Bob Stoops come out of retirement after his great time at Oklahoma to take a look at one of those SEC openings?
Does Chris Peterson return to coaching after his great runs at Boise State and at Washington?
Rumors out of Pullman, Washington say they’d like to raid the Mountain West Conference, and talk to the Aztecs Brady Hoke and Jay Norvell at Nevada.
All this activity and we haven’t gotten to Black Monday yet.
Stay tuned.
