This Day, Those Men and Women…
On this day we remember those who gave, so we could have.
Veterans Day, honoring those who served, those who fell. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is now celebrated on behalf of all who went before us, and never came back.
It was Bunker Hill, Yorktown and Concord vs the Red Coats in the early days of “us”, the United States.
It was Gettysburg, Richmond, Charleston and so many other places ablaze, the gray vs the blue.
It was Somme, the Alsace-Lorraine and the Fields of Flanders, covered with blood and remembered now by red poppies.
It was Pearl, Dresden, Guadalcanal, Buchenwald, Bataan and Hiroshima and every hot spot fire fight on a foreign country map.
It was Inchon and the 48th Parallel, the bitter cold, and a lost cause.
It was the Mekong Delta, the Ashau Valley, Saigon, Cambodia and Laos.
It was Fallujah, Baghdad, Mosul and dirt hills and caves..
There was Kaiser Wilhelm…Hitler…Tojo…Ho Chi Minh…Sadaam…the Shah and Ben Laden.
It was Washington, Lee & Grant, Pershing, Patton, McArthur, Eisenhower, and Schwarzkopf.
There is Arlington, Normandy, the Punch Bowl, Rosecrans, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Black Granite Wall of Vietnam.
The memories come back with Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, the Monument Men, Hamburger Hill, Born on the 4th of July, Full Metal Jacket and Fury.
It was Pearl Harbor, the Shot Heard Round the World, the Enola Gay, 9/11…the Twin Towers and Trench Warfare.
Today is so very different a day in our world society. A day of remembrance.
Many went, many came back, many did not, and many came back never the same.
On this Veterans Day, fly a flag, say a prayer, remember those abroad in their silent shallow graves, and salute the ones you see.
We would not be who we are, have what we have, or live where we live, without all those who served and sacrificed.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, remember the number one thing of all, “Freedom is never free.”
