This-That and Some of the Other

The Raiders end 368-days of misery with their win last night over Kansas City.  Maybe we should have seen this coming, for the Oakland defense did play hard against the Chargers last week, and they did choke off the Chiefs for the entire lst half and the final drive of the game.  Kansas City could have put itself in the driver’s seat with a win last night, because KC still has home games at Arrowhead with Broncos and Chargers.  An (8-3) ledger would have looked lots better than (7-4).

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is banged up alot.  Mike McCoy won’t say it, but the stats sure do.  In the Bolts five game winning streak, Rivers QB-Rating was a superior (116).  In the last 5-games, it is (76).  And it’s just not the offensive line or the lack of a running game, but Rivers, and the hits, the pressure and now the hurts he is dealing with.

The shiny rivalry USC-UCLA has lost a bit of its glow, but the cross-town matchup tomorrow should be explosive.  USC is wrapping up the 3-years of NCAA sanctions, which cost them 30-scholarships, and they are not what they used to be.  UCLA is trying to get to a high level every year under Jim Mora.  But tomorrow, wow.  Bruins QB-Brett Hundley and RB-Paul Perkins vs Trojans QB-Cody Kessler and RB-Buck Allen.  Bet it is high scoring.

The Padres hold a sponsors luncheon to talk about 2015, and all management can talk about is the fans experience with the 3rd biggest Video Board and the ribbon streaming boards being installed at Petco Park.  There is no buzz about this ballclub right now, but luckily, we still have the winter baseball meetings coming up, and a chance to make a trade, or hopefully sign a free agent.

Rumors, rumors everywhere, but I do not believe Pablo Sandoval (the Panda Bear), would leave the Giants to sign in San Diego.  Last I checked, Petco Park is not hitter friendly, the same thing that might take him out of ATT-Park in San Francisco.  Fenway Park sure looks inviting and so does a 90M-contract.

The Yankees have $170M committed to just 11 players for next season.  Super agent Scott Boras wants them to sign his client, Tigers pitching ace Max Scherzer, at a wildly high price of 150M or so.  Never under-estimate Boras’ genius, but if he doesn’t get it in New York, I don’t think he gets that price anywhere.  And I don’t think he gets it because George Steinbrenner isn’t around to write a wildly insane check.

San Diego State basketball is playing great defense, but where is the offense.  Yes they are (3-0) but they do not and have not replaced yet, the outside shooting of Xavier Thames.  The Maui Classic is coming up, and that might be their comedown.  They shot 24% against Cal State Bakersfield after shooting 32% vs Utah.

Defense and rebounding is a signature of Aztecs basketball, and Sky Spencer and Angelo Chol sure do that and do it well, especially at the defensive end of the court.

Russian defenseman Slava Voynov is in big trouble, with the filing last night of felony domestic abuse charges.  Wife, Marta, refuses to press charges, but injuries influenced the DA, charges had to be filed.

Jimmie Johnson is reserved in public, a firebrand in a race car, and as good a human as you will find.  Last night he wrote checks ($556,623) thru his foundation for educational programs, at Grossmont High in El Cajon, high schools in Charlotte and in Oklahoma.  Outstanding driver and citizen.
