“Aztecs Football–New Era”

——–

A new football season.
A new starting quarterback.
A new stadium.

Hopefully the same old things hold true, Aztecs football will have another winning season.

Coach Brady Hoke will have alot of new pieces to his puzzle, including Virginia Tech transfer QB-Braxton Burmeister.  He has to replace chunks of his offensive line.  His wide receiver group looks loaded.

Defense is strong in the secondary, has experience upfront and has 6-Division 1-transfers who will get lots of playing time.

As they hit the practice field on Friday afternoon, here’s what the coach had to say about his program.

The Red & Black has reached great heights, with Hoke and Rocky Long’s leadership.  Hoke is (31-18) at SDSU with 2-bowl wins.  Long went (85-43) with 4-bowl wins.

SDSU has become the flagship team in the Mountain West Conferene, supplanting Boise State.  A composite (116-61) record does that for you.  What might be next might be membership if the Pac 10-Conference decides to expand.

Coach Brady Hoke-Comments:

Excited celebrate 100th season of Aztecs football
Excited at Snapdragon Stadium

SDSU will assist investigation as requested
We will not tolerate this behaviour in the program
SDPolice have yet to tell us the athletes that might be involved
We will hold them accountable when investigation is completed
SDSU has begun its own process

Have gone thru 3-phases of off season workouts
1-of better summers a team has had
We won 12-games and we play for championships

Snapdragon-thrilled to have a home
We must honor great coaches-players have come before

Landscape has changed..conference moves, transfer portal..NIL part of us

Want players to create value to this program

Mountain West Conference really competitive-we like MWC
If opportunities come, we have to talk about it
Want it to be the right thing for

Proud DJ Pumphrey coming back to get degree-go to Grad Asst role
Pumphrey is a man and is so respected
His experiences at SDSU and in NFL will help players learn

Braxton Burmeister-most advanced transfer QB ever had
His leadership qualities-his grit-toughness-athletic QB
He is a throw first QB-most athletic ability we have ever had
Can move the pocket

RB-committee will work for us..not too complicated
RBs are a key strength for us because of experience
Jaylen Armstead will get playing time
Christian Kenon impressive on practice field

D1 transfers-DE-Justus Tavai will be an impact…
Redmond-McDonald-Kenon will all contribute
All have come in and had great workouts in off season
DT-Jonah Tavai can play OT with good feet
DL is really experienced-feel good about it

Our LBs-pretty good group-pretty versatile group
Moving LB-Derek Fountain to DE-really solid move

OL-need to show more in actual practices…we need leadership there
OL must dial in on technique and improve
Will run alot OL-DL drills together to bring guys along
Josh Simmons could be as good OL as I have ever had here

Alot of confidence in kicking game after Matt Araiza graduated
Might use a special kickoff guy rather than having 1-handle it all

DE-Devin Lamp-Tulsa transfer won’t start preseason-injury issues

QB-Braxton Burmeister has earned a ton of respect from teammates
RB-Chance Bell has become a real leader-put weight on-is ready
RB-Jordan Bird has done great things..must use in the right way

Challenge to start without preseason games-though scrimmage
August 20th-will do full game like scrimmage to prepare for Arizona
We will have idea on our depth by that time

Motivation bad end to last season..
We deserve to be in the polls..MWC deserves to be in the polls
We can compete with anybody..have for last 12-years.
I get ticked off lack of notice
Alot of people here would like to see how Pac 12 would be for us
In the next 2-weeks to 2-months-think there will be more tweaks in leagues
I’d like to play 9am games so nation could see us play
I’d play 3 games a year at 9am if they let us
I’d be all in for playing Mon-Tue-Wed-Thurs games to get on TV
If SDSU is in the Pac 12-more recruits will look at us..we live in San Diego

Last two years-Covid-being a road team-we had great support from campus
JD Wicker and that staff did great job helping us practice
Our players handled alot
Going to Carson..was a novelty to start..but it became a grind

USC-UCLA move…unbelievable…this was kept secret in history football
