“Aztecs Basketball & Fans”

———————

How come you don’t respect us?

That’s the cry from ‘The Show’, the fans, and the alums of San Diego State basketball.

How come when all the network basketball guys around the country talk West Coast basketball, it’s never about San Diego State.

It’s Gonzaga, it’s UCLA.  It’s Mark Few or Mick Cronin.

It’s never the Aztecs and Brian Dutcher or Viejas Arena, or the legacy set in stone by Steve Fisher.

The network guys, who do the play-by-play speak highly of the Aztecs hoops history, but not the guys at the desk in those round table discussions.

Gonzaga has put up incredible numbers under Mark Few, has put up staggering numbers up in Spokane. Granted they play-dominate in an inferior WCC conference.  But they do travel, do play big boy teams too, and they win.

Dutcher is (144-46) in his head coaching career with the Red-Black..  All those MWC banners in the building speak volumes of the success on the Mesa.

Few, in the last six years, has a (218-23) record with the Zags.  Yes they have banners and they have gone to March Madness 23-times too.

The big difference, Few has 38-wins in the NCAA tourney over his illustrious coaching career since replacing Don Monson.  38-March Madness wins.

Dutcher and his team are (0-3) when the lights come on in post season.

For San Diego State to be mentioned in the same sentence as Mick Cronin at UCLA, and the Zags and Few, they need to win come tournament time.

Talking and wishing you were a possible Sweet 16 team, or maybe be good enough to be Elite 8, means you need to step up and do it starting next week.

No more sorry tourney losses to the likes of Syracuse, Houston, Creighton.

I don’t know what SDSU really is right now.  Here they are Thursday night against outmanned Colorado State, losing, struggling, not putting them away until the final two possessions as the clock ticked down.

Thank goodness the Rams great scorer David Roddy is in the NBA right now after a last minute decision to go to the draft at the deadline, otherwise State might be flying home with a loss.

This against a Rams team that has about 6-players while the Aztecs go 9-deep.  You just never know what you get from State.  Some nights they drill three’s.  Other nights the bigs do it.  Some nights the bench saves them.  And of course you expect the defense to reward you  But there is no consistency from a very experienced team.

Guess it’s hard to complain about being (25-6), but if you want to be the West Coast’s elite team, you better be like Gonzaga, and that means winning next week when they roll the ball out on the floor.

Till then, a very good program with good kids, but not good enough to be what everyone thinks they should be, a true national power, so all the in studio analysts and bracketology boys will mention you in the first sentence when talking about the Best in the West.

Get the wins, earn the praises.  Otherwise you are a Mid-Major that cannot get thru the first weekend.  You are not yet Gonzaga.
