“Del Mar-Oh If That Track Could Talk”

-0-

Royalty comes out today and tomorrow where the Turf meets the Surf, at old Del Mar.

Th Breeders Cup, the fabulous finish to the horse racing season, goes off from post today. 13-races, 28M in winnings to be had. The Horse of the Year Award up for grabs. And the Breeders Cup Classic worth 6M to the winner.

If they are not here this weekend, they’ll be watching, horse racing fans from the Kentucky Derby to Saratoga.

The stories as you walk around the track are everywhere.

1937-Bing Crosby with the idea to take over the track, and make it a destination point for all his friends from Hollywood. Groucho Marx to Jackie Gleason. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez. John Belushi to retired Presidents.

Stars attacted stars, and they attracted great horses and trainers, and that brought us great events.

Think of big names, and they ran here.

Seabiscuit, in that historical match race in 1938.

Zenyatta, the greatest of all time. Cigar, the huge money winner. California Chrome of more recent fame.

You know the name jockeys. They’ve all rode mounts, from Billy Shoemaker to Johnny Longden….Billy Hartack to Laffitt Pincay……Eddie DelaHoussie to our modern stars Mike Smith and Gary Stevens.

The tradition and history are as important as the expectation as to what might happen on Saturday in the Breeders Cup Classic.

So many great names have been on the dirt, on that turf, in those stables.

And now we add another chapter to the crown jewel of horse racing here, Del Mar.

Oh if that track could talk, could it tell you stories, about where the stars are about to come out…again.
