Last minute thoughts on the first round of the NFL draft and the name selections made.

CHARGERS..They got lucky as their key picks came off the board early…they could have been left scrambling after their top OT and top two CBs went early.  They had to be breathing heavy that their other OT might be taken by Minnesota, infront of them, but the Vikings traded out.  The Bolts wound up with quality OT-Rashawn Slater-Nortrhwestern, who has played both right and left tackle.  Solid pick.

RAIDERS…They got rid of 3-veteran offensive lineman, and then reached in the mid first round to take Alabama’s Alex Leatherwood, a right tackle.  He was not rated at the 17th pick in the draft.

JAGUARS…Urban Meyer develops quarterbacks and creates brilliant offenses.  Did it at Utah-Florida-Ohio State.  Here comes the intellect that is Trevor Lawrence.  And they got multi-dimension Clemson RB-Travis Etienne later in the first round.  Pretty good night

JETS..Nice haul, not only the vibrant BYU-QB-Zach Wilson but then the later first round pick in Ali Vera-Tucker, the USC OT-OG.

SAN FRANCISCO..This is a surprise, taking a 1AA QB in Trey Lance, who played one game last year and played just 1-full season at North Dakota State.  Do they see a Patrick Mahomes-Colin Kaeperneck clone?

ATLANTA…What a find in Florida TE-Kyle Pitts-who becomes Matt Ryan’s new best friend.

BENGALS..They shunned offensive line help to go get a playmaker in WR-Ja’Marr Chase of LSU.  Joe Burrow still needs better protection.

MIAMI..Last year Tua at QB.  This year Jaylen Waddle at WR, gifted, fast but did get hurt.  Offense adds firepower.

DETROIT…Safe pick in OT-Penei Sewell, but new QB-Jared Goff does not have any receivers yet.

EAGLES..Need help everywhere, go get Heisman hero WR-DaVonte Smith.  He is slight, can he hold up to the pounding?

CAROLINA..Bypassed offensive line help for new QB-Sam Darnold to go get defense in CB-Jaycee Horn.

DENVER..Had choice of a great linebacker or a cover corner-enter Patrick Surtain-Alabama.

PATRIOTS…They sat and waited and he fell to them, the QB of the future in Mac Jones-Alabama….kept waiting for Bill Belichick to make a trade, but did not need to.  And Cam Newton is still there so time to develop the rookie.

ARIZONA…A surprise he went that high, but those who know LB-Zaven Collins say he is spectacular coming out of Tulsa.

COLTS..Just what they needed, pass rush help on the edge in Kwity Paye-DE-Michigan.

TITANS…Injured and with some baggage, the Titans grabbed CB-Caleb Farley early from Virginia Tech.

VIKINGS…It worked out well.  Need-pass blockers.  Arrival-Virginia Tech OT-Chris Darrishaw.

STEELERS..Could not have planned it any better-RB-Najee Harris-Alabama-a really good fit to fill a big need.

BROWNS..Someone has to figure out why he dropped on the board, but CB-Greg Newsome is good and he joins a good secondary already in place.

Rounds 2-and-3 come up Friday evening.
