“Chargers-NFL Draft….Job Done”

================

Part of me said the Chargers did not get what they needed most in the NFL draft, a starting right tackle.

Part of me says they continue to stockpile enormous young athletic talent, making them what might be the most gifted team they have had since the middle of the Marty Schottenheimer-Philip Rivers-LaDanian Tomlinson-Antonio Gates era.

I am still stunned they bypassed OT-Trevor Penning of Northern Iowa, a prototype right tackle, but everyone tells me the OG-Zion Johnson of Boston College is a ready-made NFL player right now.

The rest of the draft is loaded with athletes who can run, have had good seasons-careers in big time conferences, and have upside.

A unique look at each pick, with quotes from GM-Tom Telesco-Coach Brandon Staley, before I give them a final grade.

OG-Zion Johnson-Boston College
..Not a sexy pick..Tough-durable-smart..Handled alot of tough situations in his career..incredible story of success.

S-JT Woods-Baylor
..Rare defensive stuff..Had 6-interceptions..Lots of gas to play deep in secondary..A rare ending..will be a factor early.

RB-Isaih Spiller-Texas AM
..Alot of production in the SEC..Alot of explosive runs…Most complete back we have seen run and catch..a true 3-down back..

DT-Otito Ogbonnia-UCLA
..Big-strong-huge lower body…Explosion off the ball..Power player at point of attack

OG-Jamaree Salyer-Georgia
..Played all 5-OL spots-played so well-feather in his cap…Look how he played against Michigan..Has a winning edge..could wind up at OT

CB-Ja’Sir Taylor-Wake Forest
..Good cover skills..can play inside-out and special teams

FB-Zander Horvath-Purdue
..A Mike Alstott type-run it-catch it

CB-Deane Leonard-Mississippi State
..Taller-longer player-came from Canada did well in SEC.

From a long distance view, the Chargers secondary is full of size-speed-skill.  Johnson looks to be the equal of Rashawn Slater, last year’s success story.

Look for Salyer to get a crash course of playing in an NFL offensive line.  Maybe he is the right tackle of the future.

Of course, the Bolts could still rent a veteran free agent on a 1-year deal to play at right tackle.

East coach football people tell me Zion Johnson is complete, raady-made and a winner.  The rest of the picks are athletes who will grow.  One sure-thing.  Others with potential.  Coach em up.

Time to be a playoff team and time to win a postseason game.  Think they will.

Letter Grade (B).
