1-Man’s Opinion on Sports-Monday. “College Football Weekend–What Needs To Be Said”

“A College Football Saturday”—

First weekend of college football season.  This is what I think:

AZTECS…Ever seen anything as awful as the debut of starting QB-Jordan Brookshire?   Hideous.  Embarrassing.  After weeks and weeks of praise from his coaching staff Brookshire goes (2-11) passing in the first half.  Rattled.  Shaky.  Panic stricken.  Erratic.  You name it, you saw it.  He finished (7-19) passing against an awful New Mexico State team.  And this from a QB in the system for the 3rd year in a row.  Brady Hoke’s defense and the athletes on a loaded roster bailed SDSU out from what would have been a terrible loss.  Awful first half of cheap shot penalties by OG-Will Dunkle, who was out of control and should have-could have been ejected.  Some opening day performance by P-Matt Araiza, averaging (56Y)  a punt including blasts of  72-77 Yards..The wide receiver corps dropped passes.  The offensive line sprang leaks.  And all of 3,300 fans to see a ‘home game’ in Carson.  Next week at Arizona…can you say (56-3) beating next Saturday.  Hoke has alot of work to do otherwise this becomes another season of of disappointments infront of all those empty seats at Carson.  Coming off a (4-4) record last year, this feels like a loss to New Mexico State.

USD…Lost to Cal Poly in a game they were very productive.  The Toreros ran off 85-plays,had 425-yards in offense, but ran out of steam against a Mustangs scholarshipped roster.  Still hanging out there, the fact QB-Mason Randall threw 2-more interceptions to go with the 11-he threw in last year’s abbreviated season.  Is he the right guy?

UCLA…Off to a (2-0) start, outslugging LSU behind another 100-yard run day from Michigan transfer RB-Zach Charbonnet.  QB-Dorian Robinson yet to have a dominant game.  Chip Kelly now (12-21) in Westwood

USC…Played okay but it was San Jose State they finally wore down.  QB-Kedon Slovis (255P-2TD) and WR-Drake London (12R) were superb.

PAC 12…Upsets everywhere.  Not only losses, but whom they lost too

OREGON..QB-Antonio Brown was wildly erratic but the Ducks won over Fresno State in the final minutes on his scrambling TD run.

ARIZONA..Jed Fish’s debut as coach didn’t go well, losing to BYU-but they will be a handful as Wildcats QB-Gunnar Cruz threw for (336P)

CAL…Up and down performances seem to be a way for this program as witnessed by their loss to Nevada’s strong armed QB-Carson Strong (322P)

STANFORD…Lose badly to a substandard Kansas State team..another slow start for David Shaw’s program.

WASHINGTON…Now that is a terrible loss to 1-AA Montana…the Grizzlies defense had 3-picks and 4-sacks in probably their biggest win since the 1920s…So much for payday games

WASHINGTON STATE…Ugly loss at home to Utah State begs the question is the outspoken Nick Rolovich the right guy for the job, you know, no vaccine, being sued by a player etc..etc.

MOUNTAIN WEST…Big story is off the field, and the fact neither Boise State nor San Diego State filed application to the Big 12 to join that league as an expansion team.

BOISE STATE…Had a 21-0 lead at Central Florida but wilted in the heat in the 2nd half, allowing Knights QB-Dillon Gabriel to throw for (318-4TD) in setback.

COLORADO STATE…Beware of Jackrabbits in the garden.  South Dakota State ran for (242Y) and put up (466Y) in offense in Ft-Collins in a stunning 1-AA win.

NEW MEXICO…You have to start from somewhere and Rocky Long’s defense did in the win over Houston Baptist

AIR FORCE..Not sure why you play tiny Lafayette in the season opener..the Falcons had (370Y) rushing against the Leopards.

FRESNO…Keep an eye on 2nd year starting QB-Jake Haefner..threw for nearly 300-at Oregon after opening day (333Y) day in win last week…Could be best in the conference.

THE NATION….Some trouble spots already

CLEMSON had 3-yards rushing in the loss to Georgia….Life after Trevor Lawrence and Travis Ettiene will be hard for Dabo Swinney.

LSU..The Joe Burrow era is over..last year not good..opening day this year not good…the screaming about Ed Ogeron about to begin.

ALABAMA…Next parts off the assembly line..QB-Bryce Young and his mates mauled Miami badly in the opener….So much for questions how they would do with their top players having moved to the NFL

OHIO STATE..Next really good QB arrived-CJ Stroud (294P-4TD) in debuth for Scarlet & Gray.

NOTRE DAME…Life after Ian Book started well with Wisconsin transfer QB-Jack Can throwing for (338-4TD)

PRESBYTERIAN…How about this storyline…Division 1-transfer QB-Ron Hefley-ex Michigan..throws for (538Y) and NCAA record 10-TDs in Presby win over NAIA-St Anthony’s (84-43)
