‘No Holiday for Sports’

————

A busy weekend, a Monday holiday upon us.

PADRES…They have some issues.  A batting order that had 9-guys hitting under .220.  Now Manny Machado is sitting with elbow inflammation.  They are falling  behind the Dodgers, and now they head out on the road  to play Milwaukee-St Louis and then the Mets back here at Petco Park.

You cannot say ‘small sample size’ about the batting order.  Teams have figured out Jake Cronenworth.  For all Ha Seong-Kim does with the glove, he does not do much with his bat.  Trent Grisholm is doing little of anything as a lead off man  There’s not much offense from whomever is out in left field or behind home plate or in the DH role.

The front office gets an occasional big hit from Luke Voit or Jurickson Profar or Wil Myers but not very often.

And now an overworked bullpen is blowing leads, with home run balls.  Three times this week, Taylor Rodgers, Nebil Crismatt and Craig Stammen gave up home run bombs that hurt the team.

Add to this, is no Fernando Tatis sighting yet.  He is doing nothing baseball related in any batting cage or fielding drills.  It is now June and it may be July before he’s ready, and you don’t know about setbacks.

The Dodgers, despite injuries, are pounding their way to wins, having won 13-of-15, and they still have 16-games left against San Diego.

GM AJ Preller can’t take on any salary, and unless he is willing to deal quality lower minor leaguers, he may have to ride this out and hope his team finds base hits.   But at the quarter mark of the schedule, they have great staring pitching, a strong but overworked closer, and just not enough bats.

LAKERS….They filled the coaching vacancy with a surprise hire.  The former coach suggested this coach.  Legendary Phil Jackson, working as a consultant, gave Darvin Ham his first assistant’s job, and had input into this hire.  Why the Lakers would not further consider Mike Brown is a stunner, considering his success in Cleveland as head coach, and what he has done as the lead assistant at Golden State.  They still have roster issues, cap issues, and no draft pick issues?  And the fear that the star players may walk all over the rookie head coach.

———-
AZTECS…Superb off season for Brian Dutcher.  He did not get hurt in the transfer portal, got 4-veteran players to return for an extra year of eligility, landed 3-productive transfers and landed 2-bluechip recruits.  We could be looking at 30-win season up on the Mesa.

USD….In the shadows, a nice start for Coach Steve Lavin, getting two veterans to return to the team instead of transferring, and adding 4-transfers including  including two starters from Pac 12 schools.  Now he just needs to recruit high school talent a year from now.

————-
Indy 500….What a wild day.  The top 3-starters self destructed.  Pole sitter Scott Dixon was hit with a pit lane violation late, while leading.  Front row starter Alex Palou violated pit rules under caution.  The third guy upfront Rinus VeeKay wrecked early.  It was a day of yellow flags, cars crashing, and then the Red Flag after the Jimmie Johnson crash late in the race.  Johnson started 12th, got caught in traffic, dropped to 16th, had handling problems dumping to 26th and then had the car come out from underneath him with six laps left plastering the wall.  Swedish star Marcus Ericksson won, outrunning the field in the final 3-laps after the red flag restart.

——————
CHARGERS…They have all their draft picks signed, led by OG-Zion Johnson, traded for Khalil Mack, signed 6-free agents including ex Rams-Sebastian Day, Morgan Fox, Troy Reeder and Gerald Everett.  They look ready.  When is opening day coming?
——————–
SDSU…All the fall excitement with the new stadium and a push to get to 16,000-sold season tickets, will be offset by really how hard the schedule is.  Open with Arizona at home, play at Utah, and road games at Boise-Nevada-Fresno State.  Hope Virginia Tech transfer Braxton Burmeister is the real deal at quarterback.
