“The Chargers QB–Now I Know”

-0-

It finally dawned on me, stupid me, I couldn’t figure it out for a year and a half.

I’ve sat there and watched Justin Herbert do what he does, last year as a rookie, and now this year as he takes steps towards super-stardom.

We’re always comparing this player to that player, and I just could not configure whom Herbert was like among all the great QBs I have seen in my years as the Voice of the Chargers, the Seahawks and what I have done on TV.

Then in the midst of the dominant win over the Giants, it dawned on me.

JUSTIN HERBERT = JOHN ELWAY.

Watch him make plays down the field deep.
Watch him make every type of throws possible, slants, outs, back shoulders
Watch him move the pocket to avoid the rush
Watch him break containment and bolt for big yardage running the ball.

He is the reincarnation of Elway.
He’s not the gifted Peyton Manning
He’s not Tom Brady spraying the ball
He’s not Lamar Jackson nor Patrick Mahomes athletically

But he’s damn good with lots of style points.

The Chargers are (8-5) because of his gifts and he is doing this Sunday-by-Sunday.

Watch him move the pocket and throw a rainbow 60Y-TD pass to Jaylen Guyton.

Watch the blue dart pass to the back shoulder of Mike Williams.

Watch him run to a seam for a crucial 3rd down run to keep a drive going.

He makes everyone around him so dangerous, as witnessed by how he piled up (423Y) in offense without his top wideout Keenan Allen.

It was an impressive win against a pathetic NY Giants football team

The Giants are a mess.

Top QB-Daniel Jones has a neck injury.  Big money WR-Ken Golladay isn’t much in the offense.  Saquon Barkley is a gifted running back coming back from knee surgery a year ago.  The defense was dismal.  Special teams had stupid calls.

They had already fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and it obviously didn’t help.

The stats were staggering towards the Chargers heading into the 4th quarter.  At one point LA had an (18-6) edge in first downs; a (289-145) edge in yards; a (40-29) snap advantage; and a 22-11 minute time of possession lead.  The Giants had 5-three and outs along the way.

It was so bad, I thought maybe Giants owner John Mara would pull a Lane Kiffin move, and fire  GM-Dave Gettelman on the tarmac at LAX before the team flew home to New York with its disgusting (4-9) hopeless record..

But that’s the Giants problem.

The Chargers, they get to prepare now for a showdown game at home on Thursday against the Chiefs.

And think about the QB-showdown with Mahomes..and the knowledge they have a John Elway clone at the controls.

Now I know who Justin Herbert reminds me of.

And the scoreboard should also read:

JUSTIN HERBERT = JOHN ELWAY = WINS.
