“Chargers-Do Business Differently”

The Chargers came out of character on Monday and Tuesday, a wild spending spree never seen in the last decade.

It begs the question who is making decisions now in the Chargers front office?  The aggressiveness equals the way coach Brandon Staley coaches games.  As of this hour, the Chargers have spent 110M in free agency in addition to the huge amount of money they took on with the trade for LB-Khalil Mack.

Has ownership given Staley the final decision on the roster over longtime GM-Tom Telesco and President of Football Ops John Spanos?  Sure seems that way, for Telesco has never acted like this in player deals or free agency dating back to his hiring in San Diego.

The almost immediate signing of Patriots star CB-JC Jackson amounted to an (82M) investment, with 40M guaranteed.  His 25-pass interceptions over 4-years in New England are outstanding as is his athleticism.

Addresssing the importation of Rams DT-Sebastian Joseph-Day and Giants DT-Austin Johnson accounted for another 37M in committments.

The trade for Mack added 17-23-27M in payroll over the next three years.  But it also added a fierce pass rush guy opposite Joey Bosa, and now Jackson’s skill joins Derwin James and the young kids in Asanta Samuel-Alois Gilman in a rebuilt secondary.

The Chargers took 56M-in cap space and spent down to 12M in a span of 48-hours of negotiations.  They just added (10.7M) cap space by releasing Bryan Bulaga.  They might clear another (8.5M) if they dump DT-Linval Joseph.

Surprisingly they walked away from DE-Uchenna Nwos, despite a very strong year., and are not offering TE-Jared Cook a new deal despite a pretty strong veteran season coupled with young QB-Justin Herbert.  And the same fate likely faces veteran CB-Chris Harris, also out on the corner.

Unresolved is young DT-Jason Jones, who got better and better as the year went on.  He remains unsigned.

They could address their offensive line in the first and second round of the draft, which is loaded upfront.  Only the coming days will tell if they do anything else, after 51-NFL players changed teams on Monday and Tuesday.
