“NFL in San Diego–No Team-Lots of Fans”

-0-

I feel like screaming at Roger Goodell, Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft and all the ‘rich boys’ club owners who have NFL franchises.

The NFL playoffs march into the second round of the playoffs this weekend.

We don’t have a team, because Goodell and NFL owners allowed Dean Spanos to move the franchise to Los Angeles.

You know, the “Fight for LA” franchise that has failed miserably at the box office, just fired its coach, and has just 2-playoff wins since 2008.

Do you know what was left behind?  NFL fans.  Lots of NFL fans.

The TV ratings do not lie.

For the San Diego market, last weekend’s playoff ratings are out and they are amazing.

A market that supported the Chargers for 55-years only to get dumped on by the owner, ripping the team from the hearts of the fans is still NFL mad.

And yet, who was infront of the TV all last weekend watching NFL football.  Left-behind San Diego Chargers fans from Otay Mesa to Oceanside and everywhere in between.

The scoreboard does not lie.  The TV ratings in this market last weekend.

(20.1) rating…Steelers-Browns
(18.7) rating…Saints-Bears
(17.5) rating…Tampa Bay-Washington
(17.3) rating…Rams-Seahawks
(16.5) rating…Colts-Bills
(12.6) rating…Ravens-Titans

What a disgrace, the NFL allowed this team to be pulled out of this market by that man.

Trust me, next year, when fans are allowed back in the stands, the Rams will be playing infront of 70,000 in their shiny new stadium.  The Chargers will be drawing 25,000 in their rented-adopted home in LA in the same stadium.

San Diego will watch games, and will likely continue to curse the leadership of Roger Goodell and the ownership of Dean Spanos.

No team.  Lots of fans.  Absolute disgrace.

San Diego loves NFL games.
San Diego should never forget what was allowed to happen.

1-Man’s Opinion on Sports–Wednesday “Baseball Free Agency…On the Market-On the Clock”

“Baseball Free Agency…On he Market…On the Clock”

1-Month and Counting before pitchers and catchers report to the Cactus League and the Grapefruit Circuit.

The big name free agents  who entered the market right after the World Series, are still on the board  just a month out from camps opening.

Owners refusing to spend mega money after losing so much money a year ago?
Owners trying to crush and flatten the earning curve of players?
Players asking too many years-too much money in a year of tight budgets?

Here’s a look via the New York Times, who is still out there.

“Baseball’s Free Agents–Who’s Left”

-0-

——————-

1.) Trevor Bauer, RHP (original prediction: four years, $128MM)

As was the case when the offseason opened, it’s unclear what kind of deal Bauer is seeking. Yes, he’d probably love to break Gerrit Cole’s annual average value of $36MM, but will it be for one year or over the long haul? Bauer, the reigning National League Cy Young winner, has continued to leave all options on the table. While Bauer recently met with the Blue Jays, there haven’t been many strong rumors connecting him to specific teams. Regardless, it seems likely Bauer will price himself out of Cincinnati, where he thrived in 2020.
2.) J.T. Realmuto, C (original prediction: five years, $125MM)

Again, there doesn’t seem to be much happening with Realmuto. The Phillies, with whom he spent the previous two years and served as the game’s best catcher, certainly want him back. But are they willing to meet Realmuto’s demands? No dice so far. Otherwise, as MLBTR’s Anthony Franco wrote a couple weeks back, the Jays, Angels and Astros are just a few teams that could conceivably sign Realmuto.
3.) George Springer, OF (original prediction: five years, $125MM)

Springer was among the sport’s best outfielders in Houston from 2014-19, but it doesn’t seem as if he’ll remain with the club. Springer reportedly has multiple offers worth upward of $100MM, though the Astros haven’t really been connected to him in the rumor mill this winter. The Jays and Mets have come off as Springer’s most ardent suitors to this point, though New York’s interest may have cooled off after it acquired shortstop Francisco Lindor and right-hander Carlos Carrasco from Cleveland last week. The Mets might rather duck the $210MM luxury tax in 2020, and adding Springer would make that a difficult goal to achieve.
4.) Marcell Ozuna, OF/DH (original prediction: four years, $72MM)

Wouldn’t it be nice if MLB announced whether there will be a universal DH in 2021? The decision will be quite meaningful to someone like Ozuna, who was a DH more than an outfielder with Atlanta last season. Thanks in part to the lack of clarity on the DH position, Ozuna’s market has been quiet so far. However, anyone acquiring him will land a player who was an all-world hitter in 2020. The 30-year-old dominated in both bottom-line statistics and Statcast figures.
5.) DJ LeMahieu, INF (original prediction: four years, $68MM)

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Toronto looks like a realistic possibility for another top free agent in LeMahieu. That said, the Yankees – with whom the second baseman was outstanding from 2019-20 – as well as the Dodgers, Red Sox, Braves, Cardinals and Mets may be in the mix. It’s a bit befuddling that the Yankees haven’t yet used their financial might to bring back LeMahieu, who apparently wants to re-sign after a batting title-winning, near-AL MVP season, but the two sides have been unable to close the gap in negotiations. In an ideal world for LeMahieu, he could collect around $100MM on his next deal. That’s a far cry from the two-year, $24MM contract he previously signed with the Yankees.
8.) Didi Gregorius, SS (original prediction: three years, $39MM)

The Gregorius rumor mill has been surprisingly quiet to this point. Aside from 2019, when Sir Didi was coming back from Tommy John surgery, he has been consistently productive over the past few years. He rebounded last season in Philadelphia, perhaps his lone season with the team, though it may not be willing to re-sign him if it isn’t going to spend a large amount. Barring a re-signing in Philly, two of Gregorius’ other ex-teams – the Reds and Yankees – might be among those to make pushes for him.
10.) Masahiro Tanaka, RHP (original prediction: three years, $39MM)

Beyond Bauer, the starting pitching market has dwindled rapidly in terms of both free agency and trades. A few examples: Marcus Stroman and Kevin Gausman, whom MLBTR initially ranked as top 10 free agents, accepted qualifying offers. Meanwhile, Yu Darvish and Blake Snell joined new teams in blockbuster deals, and Nippon Professional Baseball’s Tomoyuki Suganodecided to stay in Japan. Tanaka – who, like Darvish and Sugano, hails from Japan – is still available, and he might be the second-best starter left in free agency. Even though the 32-year-old generally got the job done as a Yankee from 2014-20, the team hasn’t made a big effort to sign him to this point. Neither has anyone else, it seems, and Tanaka hasn’t closed the door on a return to Japan.
11.) Jake Odorizzi, RHP (original prediction: three years, $39MM)

Odorizzi went through an injury-limited 2020 in Minnesota, recording a mere 13 2/3 innings, but teams know what he’s capable of doing. As recently as 2019, Odorizzi was an All-Star with a 3.51 ERA in 159 frames. The Twins then gave Odorizzi a qualifying offer, which he accepted, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see him reel in a multiyear deal before next season. At least a few teams have shown interest in the soon-to-be 31-year-old this winter.
12.) Liam Hendriks, RHP (original prediction: three years, $30MM)

Hendriks may have been the top reliever in baseball in the previous two years in Oakland, but he doesn’t seem to be in free agency at the preferred time. Also soon to turn 32, the Blue Jays (if you can believe it), Dodgers, Astros and White Sox have been connected to Hendriks over the past couple of months.
13.) Michael Brantley, OF/DH (original prediction: two years, $28MM)

Considering the defensive questions surrounding him, Brantley is in a similar position to Ozuna at the moment. It would be beneficial to Brantley if MLB kept the universal DH around next season, as he’s a 33-year-old (34 in May) with an injury history who didn’t see much time in the field as an Astro in 2020. A few teams have shown interest in Brantley since then, though it doesn’t appear he’s all that close to signing anywhere.

1-Man’s Opinion on Sports–Tuesday. “Roll Tide”

“Roll Tide”

-0-

Pick any word you want, it probably fits the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Dazzling
Relentless
Explosive
Skilled
Methodical

Just ask the rest of the country, and they would probably ad some obscene adjectives and adverbs to the description.

Nick Saban wins his 7th National Title, and Bama continued its dominance by destroying Ohio State in the title game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

It was over before halftime.  In a game tied (14-14), the Crimson and White reeled off 4-touchdown drives in 12-minutes to torch the Scarlet and Gray.

DeVonta Smith, the Heisman Trophy winning wide receiver, was like a Tornado, with 12-receptions for 215-yards and 3-TDs before he left in the third quarter with a hand injury.

Quarterback Mac Jones sprayed passes all over the field, and at one point was (25-30) for (342) yards in the opening half alone.

How dominant were they?  Alabama had (389) yards in 24-minutes of football.

The Buckeyes never had a chance.  Plagued by covid issues all season, QB-Justin Fields couldn’t do it by himself.  At one point he was (6-15) passing, and then he lost his top running back Trey Sermon with a collarbone injury on the first carry.

But it would not have mattered because whatever outgoing offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian dialed up, worked.  Sarkisian is headed to the University of Texas on Wednesday to become the Longhorns new head coach.  We’ll see how good he is without the Tide players to run his schemes.

Bear Bryant built the Tide.  Saban has taken the program to a new galaxy.

They recruit 5-star talents, kids coming in the door with enormous skill sets, or size, or toughness, or high motors.

They put them in the Bama weight training and nutrition programs.  They are taught by the collection of gifted coaches Saban employs.  And they winm, oh do they win.

As the sun comes up, Saban is now (79-6) in his last 6-years with the Tide.  He is (170-23) overall at Alabama.  His career record is (261-65-1) as a college head coach.

Aside from his three year experience with the Miami Dolphins, he has won everywhere.

As a player at Kent State.  As a college coach at Toledo-Michigan State and then Tuscaloosa.

Imagine being Clemson or Ohio State and not being able to compete with the Tide.

Imagine being Vanderbilt in the SEC.
Imagine being USC trying to regain relevance.
Imagine being Penn State or Oklahoma and no longer being in the same solar system.

When they were done it wound up like I thought it would, all Alabama, no hope Ohio State.

Pick any number you want…623-yards in offense…a QB throwing for 464 and 5-scores or what the WR did..12-catches in 24-minutes time.

I guess the only question to be answered.  If they can do it at Alabama, why can’t it be done at other places around the country?

Until someone can explain it, we’ll just have to roll with it, Roll Tide.

1-Man’s Opinion on Sports–Monday “NFL Playoffs-Blowouts-Bad Games”

Posted by on January 11th, 2021  •  0 Comments  •

::”NFL Thoughts-Notes”

-0-

Weekend one of the playoffs has come and gone, and gone are a pretty good teams.

RAMS…Defense carried the day, the sacks, the pressures, the disruption of the Seahawks…That entire Rams front, Aaron Donald, Leonard Floyd, Michael Brockers  and the guys of the bench chased Russell Wilson all over the field.  5-sacks, 10-hits and a bunch of tackles for losses.  Cannot  have confidence in the ailing Jared Goff after the (9-19) passing day, but any given play to Robert Woods or Cooper Kupp can make a difference.  The Rams live for at least another week.

SEATTLE…What was once a red hot MVP candidate on a team that was rolling, sure didn’t look like that.  Wilson had no time, no pocket, nowhere to run.  First home loss in the post season for Pete Carroll’s team since 2005. They have to make changes in that offensive front and get healthy on defense.

COLTS…A good season, a revival led by Philip Rivers.  They ran out of opportunities in Buffalo because the Bills defense got better and better as the game wore on.  Rivers drove them to the 4-20-40 and they never came away with points in what turned out to be a 1-TD game.  They get heavy duty RB-Marlon Mack back next year to join hot shot rookie Jon Taylor.  All the young players will be a year older too.  Look for Rivers to return next season to take care of ‘unfinished business’.

BILLS…Tremendous quarterbacking from Josh Allen, the big plays of the wide receivers, a rugged defense, and an injury free season.  Very good team as they go to the second round next weekend.  This is a completee team, playing at home.

TAMPA BAY….Tom Brady can still do it but he is so much more dangerous. The difference, he plays for Bruce Arians and the Bucs have given him firepower to throw the ball too.  You ever seen the likes of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, , or Ronald Jones wearing Patriots colors?  Arians attacks down the field, and gives Brady the weapons to do that.

WASHINGTON…A season of upheaval ends but better days are ahead.  Ron Rivera’s cancer fight; Alex Smith’s courageous comeback from near amputation; the disgrace of Derrius Grice; the mess with owner Daniel Snyder.  A great defense could not do it by themselves, but that front is very good.  Maybe they found a quarterback in Taylor Heinicke.  They have high draft picks.

TITANS…It was a disappointment, the loss to Baltimore, but it was Big Boy football, a street fight, and somebody good was going to lose.  Derrick Henry had nowhere to run, the pressure was strong on Ryan Tannehill.  Tennessee’s defense, which gave up lots of yards all season, needs upgrades.

RAVENS….Lamar Jackson makes plays every game, every way.  Think what they would be like, if they had more wide receiver help.  And that defensive unit, a perfect fit for John Harbaugh’s personality, always angry.  They are rock solid tough, still a bit short on offense aside from the quarterback, and their hardball personality style of play means you will have to be ready for a war.

SAINTS…Drew Brees had his hands full, people in his face, getting hit, pressured, not getting much protection.  The same situation for RB-Alvin Kamara because the Bears defense was so rugged.  But the Saints defense is rugged too, but unsung, and they choked off virtually every facet of the Bears offense.  Not sure we have seen the best the Saints have to offer till Micheal Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Jaed Cook can do when they are all on the field together.  That is finally happeing.  Brees is likely headed to retirement.  Next week could be his farewell game.

BEARS…They had the fast start, the six game losing streak, then the late season win streak.  The quarterbacking of Trubisky-Foles has been abysmal.  The defense plays so hard and is so tough and athletic.  Wasting away a bunch of talent.

STEELERS…You cannot start a playoff game any worse than Pittsbugh did, bad snap-for a Browns TD…an errant Ben Roethlisberger interception that results in a TD…a big play rushing TD…and another Roethlsiberger pick, all in the first 12-minutes of the night….(28-0) out of the gates…So much for that 17-game losing streak Cleveland dragged into that stadium…The quarterback looks done..cannot move the pocket…arm slot looks different-bad throws-bad timing-bad decisions.  Bad loss.  Lots of questions about what happened the last month of the Steelers season..not the same team

BROWNS….Cleveland sets an NFL record for all time, scoring in the playoffs…28-points in the opening quarter…taking out decades of bad losses on Pittsburgh in the opening quarter of that game..  Who needs practice-because of the Covid outbreak, head coach Kevin Stefanski and 4-other assistants, did not make the trip..the Browns roared to that avalanche of points at the start.  They had 1-walkthru in the dark on Friday, that is all in a 7-day span.

Here comes weekend number two. and the best will be playing the best.

“Wildcard Weekend–Will Be Wild”

-0-

Get ready-get set–go.

Here comes the NFL’s wildcard weekend in a new format.  Kansas City and Green Bay have the weekend off.  Everyone else plays.

COLTS-BILLS….Indy gets a break..when was the last time you heard it would be 48-degrees, no wind, on a January-Saturday on the Niagra frontier.  Philip Rivers (4169P-21TD) cut his turnovers in half…Aided by rookie RB-Jonathon Taylor (1169R-5YPC)…Unsung heroes-the Colts defense 40-sacks-25 takeaways, anchored by DE-DeForrest Buckner..LB-Darius Leonard..and a bunch of young DBs who can run…Buffalo is stacked on offense with QB-Josh Allen (4955APY-45TD) and WRs Stefon Diggs (127R)-Cole Beasley (87R)…Bills have arrived with this (13-3) season.

RAMS-SEATTLE….QB-Jared Goff, coming off thumb surgery will start-remains to be seen how strong his passes are and how accurate they are…Rams ailing at RB but will have Cooper Kupp (92R)-Robert Woods (90R) and those TEs back so it will be a throwing game…Look for Rams defense to go after and slow down Russell Wilson (4200P-42TD) but does LA have enough to slow down DK Metcalf-Tyler Lockett (183) combined catches..Rams defense (53QB sacks-22 takeaways) will have its hands full…Pick-Seattle.

TAMPA BAY-WASHINGTON…Tom Brady and offense sizzling but so is Washington defense..Brady (4623P-40TD)…now he has WR-Mike Evans back to go with Chris Godwin-Antonio Brown..Washisngton defense superbe (304YPG-47 sacks)..but offense limited if Taylor Heinicke starts at QB..how much Alex Smith plays remains to be seen…Tampa in blowout.

BALTIMORE-TENNESSEE…Big Boy football game…..RB-Derrick Henry (2027R-5.6YPC)…QB-Ryan Tannehill (3918P-33TD)…WRs AJ Brown-Corey Davis (15YPC) against Ravens rugged defense-holding teams (34%-conversion rate)…Ravens no longer QB-Lamar Jackson against the world…Jackson (3762APY-33TD) now complimented by run game (1528R) paced by JK Dobbins-Gus Edwards…Titans brilliant offense (396YPG) bothered by bad defense (398YPG)…But Tennessee has fired power to win this game.

BEARS-SAINTS…New Orleans is finally healthy…Drew Brees (24TD-6Int)..RB-Alvin Kamara (1700APY-21TD) and WRs Mike Thomas-Emanuel Sanders and TE-Jared Cook…Lost in all talk is Denis Allen’s defense (310YPG-45 sacks)…Bears are anemic (331YPG-34% on 3rd downs)…defense gets worn down…Saints blowout win.

BROWNS-STEELERS…Which Ben Roethlisberger shows up…the one who had the fabulous 2nd half in last game to stop all the bleeding…or the QB who had 3-horrible games in a row…The Steelers QB (33TD-10 Int)…the top 3-WRs-JuJu Smith-Chase Claypool-Deiontae Johnson combined (247R) this year…Cleveland-plagued by Covid outbreak-still has firepower…RBs Nick Chubb-Kareem Hunt combined (1900R) must run the ball…Baker Mayfield (3563-26TD)..Jarvis Landry (72R)…Steelers defense finally healthy and could carry the day (56-sacks-27 takeaways)…Need to mention Browns have lost 17-straight games in Pittsburgh..and are just (6-43) playing at 3-Rivers-Heinz Field since 1970…Steelers to win in what will be a war.

Enjoy this weekend.
