San Diego Union Tribune…owner Patrick Soon-Shiong gives up ownership of UT-sells it to hedge fund operator Alden Capitol…which runs the Southern California News Group…The News group includes the Orange County Register, Riverside Press and LA Daily News…Memo to employees there will be buyouts and layoffs effective next Monday..UT has 108-Newsroom employees…Alden Capital has history of cutbacks and decreases in content….Shiong owned UT since purchasing it and LA Times in 2018-but failed to build a strong subscriber following despite increased staffing.
LA Times..laid off 78-news side employees last week-about 13% of staff..announced earlier deadlines…cut back in hard core content and more features writing rather than game stories and game notes.
NY Times..Folds its entire sports department and will shift sports reports into different sports roles…Times took over operation of the ‘The Athletic’ last yar but lost 43M in operations in its first year…Will try to convince Times sports fans to subscribe to the Athletic website.
The Athletic..cut some 20-beat writers and editors last month in a streamlining.
