‘SUPER BOWL PREVIEW’
===============

Big game Sunday is coming.
Niners-Chiefs
Great coaches
Amazing coordinators
Red Hot quarterbacks
Tremendous skill talent
Fierce pass rushers
Athletes everywhere.

So many storylines to pay attention too.
Here are topics you might want to consider with the stats I will give you.

Andy Reid has a history of winning post season games. He has a history of unveiling formations people never saw before, ambushing defenses.  He is a mad scientist.  There is lots of sizzle.

Kyle Shanahan plays sledgehammer football, offense and defense.

Patrick Mahomes has been there and succeeded in post season play.  Brock Purdy has little experience at this level and has struggled this post season.

The skill guys are superb whether it’s Travis Kelce or the dynamics of Deebo Samuel-Brandon Aiyuk, there are big plays out there.

Christian McCaffrey can do everything, is a game breaker if he gets to the second level, and just beats you up.  The Chiefs cannot match that.

Chris Jones and a very athletic defense have had a superb, highly ranked season for Kansas City.  As rugged as the San Francisco defense is, you have to be concerned about how poorly they have played in their postseason games this year, giving up chunk plays, and touchdowns, digging holes they were lucky to climb out of.

Harrison Butker has been so good for so long and is trustworthy in pressure packed games.  Jake Moody is young, and has been erratic and you wonder if this stage on Sunday, is too big for him.

Who wins:  Chiefs 31-29.

1-Man’s Opinion on Sports-Thursday “AZTECS FOOTBALL–A NEW BEGINNING”

“AZTECS NEW BEGINNING”
=================

Sean Lewis has arrived as the new football coach at San Diego State.

This will be a new experience, maybe a new era, the debut of ‘Aztecs Air’, this state of the art passing game he perfected at Kent State and brought to Colorado.

That’s not the only thing that is new.  So are 36-new recruits, 20-from the transfer portal, and 16-high school recruits.

Included will be two new QBs, a transfer from Florida State and a passing star from the high school ranks in Indianapolis.

The recruiting list includes justm5-offensive lineman and only 4-on the defensive line, odd, in that SDSU graduated alot and lost a ton in the transfer portal.

To augment his new playbook, he has imported 4-tight ends and 7-wide receivers.

But the real story line will be the importation of QBs AJ Duffy from FSU and Danny O’Neil from the Indianapolis high school ranks.

Sean Lewis-Recruiting press conference:
====================

Close and bow on signing class
Excited what we have been able to do since December

Make sure we could fill the trenches were filled
Wanted length and speed
Taking right kids in OL-DL
Very fluid how many scholarships we have left

New transfer portal-better stay ahead of curve to get players
We learn to manage roster differently now than a few years ago
Another spring practice-there is another window to get players
The greener pasture may not be somewhere else
Grow our green grass-develop our players

This transition was smooth..we laid out plan how to fill this roster out
Top pillars, building our culture and adding players
We think we have the right fit

Wanted be truthful with our players..constant dialogue
I chose to be here..want you to be here-let’s go do this work together
We have to work thru the adversity
Bringing kids home who went somewhere else important

Priorities now in winter conditioning-size-strength-to run our offense
Start installing our schemes like
Install our cultural beliefs..describe our formations

Kids are hungry-appetite
Kids don’t know what they don’t know
I want to run 40-plays in a 15-minute span
It is a holistic change in what we do
We have 104-kids-full roster and early enrollees
I have had multiple 1,000-yard receivers at Kent-Colorado
Number of plays we run-everyone has opportunity to be in the system

We show kids tapes of Bowling Green-Syracuse-Kent State
Show them what our receivers have become other places
Come join..they sign with us..they entrust us with our careers

Excited to see where we can take SDSU as landscaped has changed
So much room for growth opportunity here

In spring, who is our QB.  What can we put on tape to show them good-elite
Experience everything..at Kent find solutions..way to win these games
Colorado-learned how focus it is to do each week-laser focused
Don’t let end results worry you-keep improving

Scheme-skill help us..need right players in place
Culture drives execution
There are alot of good coaches in the MWC
There are ways to slow this down-but our execution allows us to grow

Not disappointed so many kids left-kids made decisions
If Bill Belichick got this job-players would have left too

Bringing Mike Schmidt back as OL coach from Syracuse-Miss St-great

April 20th will be our spring game here

We brought in 1-year transfer players, like TE-Jude Wolf-USC
WR-Ja Shawn Polk has 1-year came from Kent-West Virginia
WR-Nate Bennett-big frame-Portland State-refined route runner
WR-Lewis Brown-Colorado State-deep skill set
WR-Jerry McClure-UCLA-tremendous high ceiling

LB-Tanu Luteli-Army-strong-fast-instinct-impressed

QB-AJ Duffy-Florida State-gym rat-smart kids-grew up in FB family
QB-Danny O’Neil-Indiana-understands this level of work to make this work

“CHARGERS-NEW GM-CLEAN PIECE OF PAPER”

==============

Joe Hortiz has arrived to link with the Chargers newly hired head coach.

Jim Harbaugh and Hortiz have a past and seem like a perfect fit.

A head coach who is a firebrand with a great reputation for winning teams.

An incoming GM who was part of a very good Baltimore Ravens infrastructure, building an AFC power

If Harbaugh’s first press conference was like a pep rally-tent revival, Hertz’s first meeting was about his philosophy and what he helped the Ravens become.

Chargers…GM-Joe Hortiz-Press Conference quotes:

..Baltimore Ravens 26-years..a long place to be somewhere
..Ozzie Newsome-GM..Alabama guy hired an Auburn kid
..Steve Bisciotti…Great owner-mentor-leader
..Jim Harbaugh…We will be ‘Batman & Robin’
..Jim Harbaugh…Top of list guys I wanted to work witty
..This is the fit-this is the job I wanted
..GM philosophy-Be patient-No snap judgements-decisions
..Discussions on everything is the process
..When you have right owner-coach-QB-you have a chance
..Work every avenue to build a team
..Big fan of NFL-Comp draft pick system
..Create a chain of draft picks yearly
..Be smart who you draft-who you re-sign
..Churn bottom of roster-Practice squad to find gems
..Want players Big-Fast-Tough Mentality
..Players must persevere to fight
..I have been in salary cap situations
..We will bring scouts in
..Must build our run game and offensive line
..Find the best player-whether you draft 5th or 32nd

Super Bowl week has begun, heading towards the Chiefs and 49ers on Sunday.

The playoffs have been spectacular.  The TV ratings have rocketed.  The NFL is getting so much publicity around their ‘Power Couple’..Travis Kelce-Taylor Swift.

But these are uneasy times on Park Avenue for the NFL for Commissioner Roger Goodell.

He was bombarded by questions in his ‘State of the NFL’ Media press conference.

Topics included the on-going Concussion lawsuits and denials made to players who have CTE issues.  Goodell’s declaration of war on the media over its reporting.  The relationship between the NFL and gambling.  The NFL-taking games, including a playoff game, to streaming.  Coaching hirings and NFL diversity or lack there-of.

1-Man’s Opinion on Sports–Monday “TEAMS IN TOWN”

Posted by on  •  0 Comments  •

==============

“NAMES IN THE NEWS”
==============

PADRES…Pitchers and catchers report next weekend.  They don’t have a LF-CF- and uncertainty at DH-1B.  They have 7-starters with rotation experience, led by Yu Darvish-Joe Musgrove.  The 3-Yankees pitchers who came in the Juan Soto trade, led by Michael King, will likely fill out slots 3-4-5.  The Friars have 9-relievers with experience, and might be the most depth anyone in baseball has.  We all away to see how Yuki Matsui and Woo Suk-Go make this transition as a setup men or a key closer.  Worry about lack of starting depth if injuries show up this year in that rotation.  AJ Preller has less than (18M) left in his budget.

DODGERS..Fan Fest was fun for the fans and there were lots of mixed messages.  Yes, Shohei Ohtani is hitting live pitching and will be ready to DH opening day.  No, Walker Beuhler will not be ready opening day, maybe starting on the 15-day DL list or at least in extended spring training.  Dustin May won’t be ready till July.  Clayton Kershaw might be back in August. Tony Gonsolin won’t pitch this year.  Big money free agent James Paxton has two track records, a very good pitcher in Boston and Seattle, but an oft-injured pitcher too who has had lots of health problems the last two years.

ANGELS..They had all the money they gave Ohtani come off the books.  They have signed a bunch of fringe free agents (12) this off season, none difference makers.  They have talked to Blake Snell.  Maybe there is a (5Y-150M) offer coming.  They should not give Scott Boras what he wants (7Y-120M).  Getting Snell sends a sign Arte Moreno wants to win.  If he makes no further deals, then this shapes up as a sad baseball season and his image gets further stained.

CHARGERS…The Spanos’ can stop celebrating now about the Jim Harbaugh hiring, now the business of football begins.  A bit surprised they would consider hiring Greg Roman as offensive coordinator.  He worked with Harbaugh in San Francisco and then with the other Harbaugh in Baltimore.  Had great success building read option offenses around Colin Kaperneck and Lamar Jackson.  But those are read option guys, pass and run alot.  I don’t want to see Justin Herbert running all over the field.  He is a great pro set pocket passer.  Why consider a change in offense that puts him at risk?

RAMS..Some coaching job by Sean McVay and now an off season to add more to the roster with draft picks and finally cap space.  But teams are raiding his coaching staff.  Surprise to me, he did not bring Brandon Staley back as defensive coordinator after Raheem Morris left for the Falcons head coaching job.

LAKERS..LeBron James calls his team Jekyll-Hyde.  Some horrid performances last week, then the surprising wins in Boston (22-2) at home, and then snapping the Knicks 9-game win streak at the Garden.  The trade deadline comes up Thursday.  Do they go get another shooting guard?  Do they put D’Angelo Russell in a deal?  Do they keep Austin Reaves?  Is the chemistry, right or wrong?

CLIPPERS…Strong team, surprising team, with chemistry that works, at least so far, Kawhi-Paul George-James Harden.  Can this continue?

UCLA..Chip Kelly wants out?  You have to be kidding me.  After this school swallowed a ton of red ink, building this financial deficit, giving him everything he wanted, and he is interviewing for NFL offensive coordinators jobs?  And he has lost 4-assistants off his staff too.  Does Kelly care about UCLA or just himself?  A mess right now, worse if he goes back to the NFL.

USC..Big spring football time coming for Trojans.  New assistant coaches.  New offense.  New QB derby.  Lots of transfers into Linc Riley’s program.

UCLA..Mick Cronin’s January meltdown about his Euro players, replaced by a team finding itself in February.  Weird basketball season.

USC..Andy Enfield’s team not where we thought it would be.  A couple of good years, replaced by sub .500-teams even with Bronny James and DJ Rodman on board.

AZTECS..Some statement win by SDSU in that battering of Utah State.  Big night from the forwards off the bench.  The guards had good games.  And the defense was vintage.  But that was one game, and surely was not what we saw in 3-back to back to back road losses in the conference.  Maybe they turned the corner whipping a (19-2) Aggies team.  Of course, they still have to go to Logan, Utah in a couple of weeks and have to play at Nevada.

AZTECS…Next month, so very busy and so important for new coach Sean Lewis as they install all new players and the Aztecs Air system.  Spring football will be worth watching.

USD..What a season for Steve Lavin.  Coming off last year’s solid season with a ton of 1-year transfers, he faced massive challenges with a younger-newer roster.  And now he has 12-wins already this season in a tough WCC.   Job well done in tough circumstances

KINGS..You cannot fire the players, so you fire coach Todd McLelland.  This was more than about coaching.  This is about underachievement from 8M players Pierre Luc Dubois and Kevin Fialla.  This is about injured and overwhelmed goaltending.  It’s about bold moves by Rob Blake that worked out well in a (20-4-7) start that led to a (3-16) losing stretch.  This is now a disappointment.

DUCKS..The long rebuild is painful.  The injury siege to Trevor Zegras is worrisome.  The trade of injured Jamie Drysdale was a surprise.  More deals may come in the next couple of weeks involving veteran players with high cap figures.  Have yet to turn the corner talent wise.

GULLS..Young players learning on the job.  AHL veterans who have not made a difference.  Dug such a hole early in the season, trying to get to the playoffs still a challenge.

Candid comments about teams we pay attention to.  Enjoy your Monday.
