“NFL Draft Report Card”

-0-

CHARGERS…They got a QB for the future…an inside LB who can run and 2-skilled young WRs.  A superb haul, coupled with the five veteran free agents they signed in the off season.  Justin Herbert has so many ingredients that add up to the ‘it factor’.  Is he more complete now than Philip Rivers was his rookie season, and is there still lots of potential to grow into.  LB-Kenneth Murray can play sideline to sideline and gives the team an explosive speed guy in the middle..and the kid WRs-KJ Hill and Joe Reed will be given a chance to jump into the rotation….Grade (A)

CAROLINA…New broom sweeps clean and that is what incoming coach Matt Rhule has done.  He has his QB, his RB, young WRs, and spent his entire draft currency on 7-defensive players.  The top 3-picks all play opening day, DT-Derrick Brown..De-Yetur Matos and S-Jimmy Chenn…We see how quickly Teddy Bridgewater becomes a star again…Grade (A)

DALLAS…Added more firepower to a great offense in WR-Cee Dee Lamb, and then got secondary help in CB-Travon Diggs and DT-Neville Gallimore…Grade (A)

DENVER..Quite an offseason with the wolves barking at the door of John Elway.  WRs-Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler will add a lot opposite Cortland Sutton and TE-Noah Fanta.  Add to that Melvin Gordon with Philip Lindsey, lots of bullets in the gun…Grade (A)

INDIANAPOLIS…Two very accomplished pass catchers in Michael Pittman and Dez Patmon, plus heavy duty RB-Jonathon Taylor mean there is lots more firepower around new QB-Philip Rivers.  And we see if QB-Jacob Eason becomes the heir apparent to Rivers in a couple of years….Grade (A)

NY GIANTS….They keep adding key pieces at the top of the board each year. so this years haul of OT-Andrew Thomas, S-Xavier McKinney CB-Darnay Holmes add alot.  Making progress and now a new coach in Joe Judge….Grade (A)

TAMPA BAY…Unique chemistry experiment upcoming with Tom Brady-Rob Gronkowski linking with madman coach Bruce Arians…Instant starters in OT-Tristan Wirfs…S-Antoine Winfield….Grade (A)

ARIZONA…3-studs early in the draft and a special package player later in the draft-good day…LB-Isaiah Simmons..OT-Josh Jones..DT-Leki Fotu  are all warriors…Interested in how they get ball in hands  of RB-Eno Benjamin….All this on top of the DeAndre Hopkins off season trade…Kyler Murray is smiling…Grade (B)

BALTIMORE…In John Harbaugh we trust…Don’t question his history for his drafts have been good…This one too…Warrior LB in Patrick Queen…versatile RB-JK Dobbins plus assortment other picks…Grade (B)

SEATTLE…Trust Pete Carroll too…seems as if he is reloading with his kind of players-speed-speed-more speed…LB-Jordyn Brooks is the next coming of Bobby Wagner…DE-Darrell Taylor can play and more OL help…Grade (B)

BUFFALO…Didn’t have a first, actually it’s Stefon Diggs, but they get a high motor pass rush guy in AJ Epensea…and a run-catch RB-in Zach Moss…to go with QB-Josh Allen and a very good Bills defense from a year ago…Grade (B)

CINCINNATI…Joe Burrow-welcome-fix this thing…adding WR-Tee Higgins and hoping all their injured WRs from a year ago, AJ Green and John Ross stay healthy, with RB-Joe Mixon..means they will be more competitive…Do they have enough defense?..Grade (B)

CLEVELAND…Last couple of years we kept saying Browns are getting there…..now they add 3-more quality young players…OT-Jed Wills..S-Grant Delpit…DT-Jordan Elliott…Pretty good talent base on roster now…Waiting for it to come together…Grade (B)

DETROIT….Have to win this year..and CB-Jeff Okudah…RB-DeAndre Swift..De-Julian Okawar will help them…Have to keep QB-Matt Stafford standing upright on field….Grade (B)

KANSAS CITY….Coach Andy Reid did not have a lot of picks, but he got great fit with top pick RB-Clyde Edwards-Hellair plus three more defensive players…All that to a team that returns 20-of-22 starters…Grade (B )

RAIDERS…Trust Mike Mayock…A year ago today we were questioning reaches they made in a top heavy defensive draft, and the Cle Ferrell and Maxx Crosby picks were exceptional…This time speed and more speed with WR-Henry Rugg…WR-Lynn Bowden..WR-Bryan Edwards..plus a reach for CB-Damon Arnette…Grade (B)

LA RAMS…They had 9-picks and went to fill open spots on the roster….RB-Cam Akers is productive…WR-Van Jefferson runs great routes…DE-Terrell Lewis is rugged…Maybe find a gem or two late in draft also…Grade (B)

MIAMI…When they were finished dealing, they had 10-picks, added a RB thru a trade and believe all the big names in the draft will pan out….A bunch of proven players in QB-Tua Tagovailoa..OT-Austin Jackson..OT-Robert Hunt..DT-Raekwon Davis….Lots of quality kids…Couple that with free agents they landed-it’s like a whole new team..Grade (B)

MINNESOTA…It’s been an off season of change especially with defense but the new pieces should fit in well…WR-Justin Jefferson replaces Stefon Diggs…CB-Jeff Gladney beefs up a thinner secondary..huge OT-Ezra Cleveland plays early….they finished up the weekend with 15-picks-so this has too be an eventful draft…Grade (B)

NY JETS…Helping QB-Sam Darnold was the protocol…thus OT-Mechi Becton..WR-Denzel Mims plus S-Ashtyn Davis….A project QB to develop also in James Morgan…Grade (B)

SAN FRANCISCO….GM-John Lynch likes to deal..so trading for OT-Trent Williams is huge…so is DT-Javon Kinlaw and potential breakout WR-Brandon Aiyuk….Grade (B)

WASHINGTON…It’s convenient to bash all-things Daniel Snyder..but adding Chase Young-DE to an already fierce defense is a positive….WR-Antonio Gibson get a chance to play early..and the intangible of Ron Rivera leadership….Grade (B)

GREEN BAY….The media going crazy of the selection of QB-Jordan Love as if Aaron Rodgers is leaving tomorrow…crazy talk….Over-reaction Monday….But as Rodgers developed under Brett Favre…Love does the same for the day Rodgers steps aside…Was surprised though they went RB with second pick….Did not do much to help in WR-group or secondary…Thought priorities were strange…Grade (C)

JACKSONVILLE…Wound up with 12-picks…Thought they might deal their two unhappy players (Fournette-Ngakoue) but didn’t.  ..CB-CJ Henderson..LB-K’Lavon Chaisson..DT-DaVon Hamilton..WR-Lavisk Shenault all play a lot early…They still have QB-uncertainty…Grade (C)

NEW ENGLAND….His team, his way, the Patriots (Belicheck) way…Didn’t draft a QB…Didn’t draft a WR…but did draft guys from Division II…1-AA…Marshall…Wyoming…Wake Forest…and a kicker…Strange mix…Do like S-Kyle Dugger (everybody comes form somewhere)…and the two LBs…Will be interesting to see what life after Tom Brady will be like…..Grade (C)

NEW ORLEANS…Not many picks (4)…and Sean Payton dealt 4-picks in one round for another pick in a different one…then drafted for need…getting a center and a linebacker….Grade (C)

PHILADELPHIA..Needed wideout help…got it in WR-Jake Reager…and then acquired pick for Jalen Hurts-who might be a very good insurance policy QB…they drafted defense…Wonder if they re-sign FA-LT-Jason Peters…Believe in Doug Pederson, the offensive mind, just wonder about Pederson drafting ability…Grade (C)

ATLANTA…Bad seasons, lots of assistant coaching changes..tons of injuries…..but they went heavy to fix a battered defense by getting CB-AJ Terrell and DT-Marlon Davidson,,,Coach Dan Quinn is in trouble…Grade (C)…

PITTSBURGH…Did not have a first round pick..but they have S-Minkah Fitzpatrick-so that is better……Diamond in the rough WR-Chase Claypoole and RB-Anthony McFarland are not household names were did produce in college….Should there have been a prospect QB on this draft list?….Grade (C)

TENNESSEE…Real mishmash of picks, a second tier OT…a DB dropping down the board…a small college RB….Intrigued by change of pace RB-Darrynton Evans…Grade (C)

CHICAGO…So the Bears paid a chunk of money for TE-Jimmy Graham and then used the first pick on another TE-Cole Kmet-strange priorities…do like CB-Jaylon Johnson..but thought other players would have been better choices….Grade (D)

HOUSTON..This has not been a good off season for Bill O’Brien and you wonder if he has made so many deals he has dealt himself out of a playoff spot…DT-Ross Blacklock is pretty good player…Always seems to be turmoil about how this Coach-GM does his business…Grade (D)

1-Man’s Opinion on Sports–Friday. “NFL Draft on TV–Surprises & Substandard Performances”

“Draft Day–Reality TV–Bad TV”

-0-

The NFL Draft, the Virtual Edition, is in the books.

It was successful, it was strange, but it was substandard too.

The NFL got thru the first round without any catastrophic incidents as they plugged in Commissioner Roger Goodell, GMs, Coaches, and live look in shots to the 32-picks in the first round.

Here-there-everywhere…opinions about the NFL Draft.

CHARGERS….A very positive week for a franchise cursed by leadership, devastated by injuries, mocked in its new hometown, hated in the town they left.  Drafting the QB of the future in Justin Herbert secures the franchise for the next decade, if this Oregon Duck is better than the last Oregon Duck taken high in the draft, Joey Harrington-Detroit Lions failure.  Then the Bolts came out of character, giving up 2-draft picks to trade for another first round pick, and getting a gamer, blazing fast inside linebacker Kenneth Murray from Oklahoma.  He can play anywhere, and now I look at all this team speed, from Joey Bosa to Melvin Ingram, to Derwin James, to Murray and say wow.  All this after the Chargers unveiled a very popular new design of Powder Blue uniforms earlier the in the week.  They won’t draft again till the 4th round, but who cares, they got two big time players to fill two big time needs.  Nice job by GM-Tom Telesco.

MIAMI…Can you save ‘risk-vs-reward’?  Everyone is raving about QB-Tua Tagovailoa and his rehab from the hip surgery.  Maybe he has a solid career, but you wonder about his hip degenerating as he goes along.  And you wonder about the 5-injuries-4 surgeries-in 3-years with the Tide.  Maybe he will be good, maybe he is a gamble.

DALLAS…Just what they need, another quality WR-in Cee Dee Lamb of Oklahoma to play opposite Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup.  Their secondary is shaky though.

CLEVELAND…Welcome OT-Jed Wells from Alabama, who joins big money free agent Jack Conklin upfront to protect QB-Baker Mayfield. The Browns seem poised to win now, though we have said that in the past.

WASHINGTON…They may be dysfunctional, may have a disliked owner, but they have DE-Chase Young with the high draft pick, as they continue to build a really good defense.  Now if only QB-Dwayne Haskins can grow as a player.

GIANTS…They had the QB-Daniel Jones last year, the RB-Saquon Barkley the year before, now they add a very good OT-Andrew Thomas, a rock solid pick.  They still need pass catchers.

RAIDERS…We knew there would be a run on receivers mid-round, and the Raiders started it, but took a surprise guy in speedster WR-Henry Rugg-Alabama, bypassing two other highly rated pass catchers.  But you cannot teach (4.27-speed).  The other pick CB-Damon Arnette helps in the teams very weak secondary.

BENGALS…Joe Burrow will mean so much on so many different levels in Cincinnati, as a player and a person from Southeast Ohio.  But there is bad history in Cincy with let round draft pick QBs.  Think David Klingler and Greg Cook.  They still need lots of help other positions.  Forever asking the question, should they have traded the #1 pick for all 3-of Miami’s 1st round picks?

49ers…A bit of a surprise, bypassing the top rated WRs with their opening pick to take USC-OT-Austin Jackson, but they came back and drafted a receiver with the other opening round pick in Arizona State’s Brandon Aiyuk.

JETS…They have Sam Darnold, but they don’t have anyone to throw the ball too right now, and they let all the top WRs stay on the board to take massive OT-Mechi Becton of Louisville.  That was a surprise.

VIKINGS..WR-Justin Jefferson tumbled down the board but fell into Minnesota’s lap and instantly becomes the replacement for Stefon Diggs.  They got lucky.  They then landed TCU-CB-Jeff Gladney with the other pick.

PACKERS…Green Bay did it with Brett Favre, got him early and developed him.  Did the same with Aaron Rodgers, let him come in and grow.  Now Jordan Love, coming off a shaky season at Utah State.  Tumbled from a possible top ten pick to #26.  The QB of the future for sure.

JAGUARS…Got defense and more defense with CB-CJ Henderson and DE-Klavon Chaisson.  Of course they had to considering how many quality players they got rid of the last two years.  Massive rebuilding underway there, but they got good players.

ARIZONA…Last year, Kyler Murray, this year LB-Isaiah Simmons, adding lots of other speed players.  They are getting better as a team for  Coach Kliff Kingsbury.

CHIEFS…Last pick of the opening round was the do-everything LSU-RB-Clyde Edwards-Hellaire.  He can play and will fit in nicely with all the things Andy Reid does on offense.

DENVER…They added Alabama WR-Jerry Judy to last year’s top pick TE-Noah Fans, plus ex Chargers RB-Melvin Gordon.  Real upgrade on offense for the young QB-Drew Lock.

SEATTLE-BALTIMORE…They always draft late, they take different type players on defense, and they develop and win with them.  That is the explanation for the Seahawks choice of little known Jordyn Brooks of Texas Tech and the Ravens selection of Patrick Queen of LSU.

TRADES…Trent Williams is still in Washington, DE-Yannick Ngouwe and RB-Leonard Fournette are still stuck in Jacksonville, and TE-OJ Howard is still in Tampa Bay.  For all the rumors of deals, none happened, at least in round one.  Maybe there will be more come Tuesday.

ESPN…They let a lot of people down.  I understand the complexities of remote broadcasts, but they had so much potential with cameras and hot mics everywhere, and the only interview they did was with Joe Burrow, the first pick.  How could that be when you had so many people you could have used to link in with players.  How come no interviews with any of the head coaches, especially the Bengals coach, of the Miami GM, or Jerry Jones or the Redskins top pick?

Roger Goodell sure looked uncomfortable trying to ad lib his way thru some of the draft choices, and looked like a fool trying to egg on the fans who were part of the visual broadcast.  Oh by the way, as the 2020 draft was underway, he announced he was awarding the 2020 draft to Las Vegas.  Meant to say 2021.  Guess if it is not scripted, not good.

Where were the NFL insiders Adam Shefter and Chris Mortensen, to explain all the trade rumors they were writing about all week, the Bengals, the Dolphins, the Chargers, the failed attempts of teams to trade up.

Sure do miss the shots of the War Room this year.  Instead Bruce Arians was lounging in shorts wearing his hat doing work on his patio.    John Lynch had his girls with him.  There was a dog in the Tampa Bay GM’s office.  And Jerry Jones sitting by himself felt-looked odd.

PLAYERS AT HOME…It looked strange.  No parties, limited people with the players.  Not a lot of excitement.  Maybe it had something to do with a delay in the linkup system.  They’d go to the players home and the camera would show them sitting, sitting, sitting, and playing on their smart phones.  Then someone would react.

NFL CHARITY…The concept of the Covid 19-support seemed out of place.  What the NFL should have done was create a “Go Fund Me Campaign” for players and fans to contribute to during the three hour broadcast.  Think of the money they could raise for US Food Pantry’s everywhere.  How could you ignore all the pictures of hundreds of cars lined up with families waiting for bags of food in every major city during this pandemic.  Missed an opportunity to do something really good.

Not much electricity on Thursday night.  Maybe it was too overwhelming to do much more from the production standpoint, but the draft night had no electricity, not enough tension, surely not enough information.

But then again our everyday life is missing a lot of things too.

NFL Draft-could have been super-thought the production was substandard.  Teams got good players.  Fans got disappointments.

———————

1. Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Burrow
QB  , LSU
HT: 6034v |  WT: 221v |  40: 4.80
National Champion Joe Burrow was hotter than a burning stump in 2019 and is the Heisman Trophy winner. He has completed an eye-popping 76.3% of his passes, torched secondaries for 5671 yards, 60 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He averaged 10.8 yards per passing attempt. His QBR is 201.96 The Ohio State transfer drives the ball through seams and challenges the smallest defensive windows in coverage. Good pocket awareness averaging 368 yards rushing averaging 3.2 yards per carry and added another 5 TDs on to his 60 passing touchdowns. Accurate and confident in his play. Works the pocket and will throw a strike with a blitzer in his face. Excellent field vision and anticipation. Burrow is a game changer with focus and execution skills.Hand 9″

2. Washington Redskins
Chase Young*
DE  , Ohio State
HT: 6047v |  WT: 264v |  40: 4.65
A heat seeking missile that is caffeinated. He plays like his hair is on fire when rushing the passer. Young stood out last year after the Nick Bosa injury and hasn’t let up his first step explosive take-off. Plays with precise timing and anticipation. Excellent use of hands combining speed, quickness, strength, and the ability to adjust on the move. Has a burst to the quarterback after slipping the block on the line of scrimmage. Gives the tackle a full toolbox of vertical push, speed, leverage, power rush, arm over, and rip moves. Has good counter moves and gets his hands up to bat down balls. Young doesn’t always go for the quarterback’s torso. He goes for the ball to get a strip fumble (see Indiana game 2019). He takes full advantage of his length and long arms. Excellent lateral quickness. Plays quarterback on option and can break out and tackle ball carrier. Can split a chip block from backs and base block from tackle. Redskins open for business. Young will be one of the league’ s top pass rushers the day he is drafted. Will a QB hungry team sell the farm and move up? If not Washington has a generational talent. Arm: 33 3/4″, Hand 10″

3. Detroit Lions
Jeff Okudah*
CB  , Ohio State
HT: 6012v |  WT: 205v |  40: 4.40
Two year starter from Grand Prairie, TX. Physical corner with experience in a variety of coverage and technique. Plays press, off, and hard corner. Effective with a two and off hand jam along with press and react and press and bail. Mirrors cuts extremely well from different looks. Fluid in transition with sudden break on the ball. Closes with a burst. He’s not a ball hawk as far as interceptions but has ball skills for the pass break. He can get his inside hand to the catch point. Stays in phase on vertical routes and extended route breaks. Solid zone defender with ability to see multiple routes and react to the quarterback delivery. Occasionally will give up leverage versus a shifty receiver but has an outstanding recovery burst. Physical in run support. Can take on a stalk block and shed working to the ball. Runs through tackles with gather and finish. Occasionally goes low but generally gets the job done. He has the size, speed and athletic ability of an elite corner. He is still developing and will be coveted in April. With Darius Slay on the market, Okudah fits a talent and position need. A trade is not out of the question. Quarterbacks make people do crazy things. Arm: 32 5/8″ Hand: 9 1/8″

4. New York Giants
Tristen Wirfs*
OT  , Iowa
HT: 6047v |  WT: 320v |  40: 4.85v
Do the Giants take uber athlete versatile star Isaiah Simmons? Or fill a major need with the best tackle in the draft to protect Daniel Jones? Wirfs is a junior from Mount Vernon, IA. An all-around athlete who won state championships in wrestling, discus, and shot put as a prep. The 20-year old underclassman and the first freshman to start in the Kirk Ferentz era jacked up four reps of 450 pounds in the power clean this past summer, making The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman’s 2019 Freak list. He puts an exclamation point on country strong. Gets good pop and movement as a zone blocker. He can decleat any defender. Plays with a good base while running his feet. He can road grade a defensive tackle out of the hole on goal-line or short yardage. As a pass protector he can engulf smaller pass rushers or mirror and stone the larger bull rushers. Plays square with good knee bend. Positions and walls off a “TEX” stunt with patience. Plays well on his feet with good balance and redirect ability. Controls the defender with his big strong hands. Can anchor a bull rush. He is as strong as an oak stump. Wirfs is young and still ascending Dave Gettleman will take this big “Hog Molly” if Chase Young doesn’t fall into his lap. The Hawkeye product is a 4 for 1 player with experience at both right and left tackle. Will start at right and move to left after Soldier’s contract is up.ARMS: 34″, Hands 10 1/4″

5. Miami Dolphins
Tua Tagovailoa*
QB  , Alabama
HT: 6000v |  WT: 217v |  40: 4.60
As battle-tested as any quarterback in the nation. Tough and hard-nosed, elevates the players around him. Confident and cool. The southpaw delivers a quick and precise release that is accurate on all levels of the route tree. Utilizes touch to near-perfection. Can add some as easily as take some off when needed. Tagovailoa is still inconsistent with his footwork and consistency from play to play. There are times he tries to do too much and forces the action rather than taking what the defense gives him. His durability has been an issue. He hasn’t learned how to consistently avoid contact. Injury prone QB must sell Dolphin physicians on medical history. Dolphins flunked Drew Brees with shoulder injury. If not Tagovailoa ,Herbert? or the top position player.Free Agent QB? Development mid round? Jalen Hurts 2nd round? .Hand 9 7/8

6. Los Angeles Chargers
Justin Herbert
QB  , Oregon
HT: 6062v |  WT: 236v |  40: 4.65
Has improved as a pocket passer week to week and year to year for the Ducks. Plays in a wide open pistol spread offensive scheme where he gets the ball out of his hand quickly. Makes quick decisions in the pitch and catch offense. Our scouts like the size and stature of Herbert with his strong and talented arm. He steps and makes all the throws outside the hash marks and has the touch on swing and check down routes. Has improved in 2019 selling the run or the run/pass action series and throws strikes to the slant and seam receivers. If Herbert is there, he’s a Charger if not Alabama tackle Jedrick Wills JR is the pick with Isaiah Simmons in the discussion.Hand: 10″

7. Carolina Panthers
Derrick Brown
DT  , Auburn
HT: 6045v |  WT: 326v |  40: 5.00
Three-year starter from Sugar Hill, GA. The dominant interior athlete has collected All-SEC honors on the field and All-SEC academic honor roll attention off the field. Brown is a combination of power and force. Drives the guard or center into the backfield with leverage, hip explosiveness, and strength. Smothers the run from tackle to tackle. Holds the Auburn squat record with 590 pounds. Has good interior awareness. Can feel blocks and schemes. Presses the pocket and gives upfield pressure. As quick as he is strong. Can hit the gap 100 miles an hour with quickness and disruptive motions. Can stack and beat double team blocks. Flashes a sudden arm over move and creates backfield chaos. The big man hustles to the perimeter and makes plays. Quick to read and react after controlling the blocker. Good instincts. A top ten pick. Future pro bowl star fits a talent and position need for the Panthers. Brown can play any 3-4 front position and will dominate inside in 4-3 fronts.Arm : 34 1/4″, Hand: 9″

8. Arizona Cardinals
Isaiah Simmons*
LB  , Clemson
HT: 6035v |  WT: 238v |  40: 4.55
This explosive star may not last until 8. If he does Steve Keim just broke Rich Eisen’s 40 yard dash record to the podium to hand in his card. If Simmons goes to the Giants at 4 then Wirfs is in Arizona. Three year starter from Olathe, KS. Simmons transitioned from safety to the Sam/ nickel back role in 2018. An explosive athlete who can do it all on defense. Plays the run like a true Sam backer and can cover like a safety. Quick with initial read and react with quick hands to engage and shed blockers. Chases across the field and make plays in space. Sudden change of direction with stop and start on a dime quickness. Can work outside-in sifting through the wash to make plays. Solid fundamental tackling ability with knee bend and finish. Has blitz skill but will need to develop more pass rush tools. Excels in coverage with the speed to stay with slot receivers up the field and mirror route breaks. Outstanding zone defender with a feel for the throwing lane. Plays multiple receivers in a zone with good positioning to go with a sudden break on the throw. Has what is needed to play in the NFL and will fit as a Will linebacker with nickel responsibilities. Arm 33 3/8 “, Hand 9 5/8″

9. Jacksonville Jaguars
Javon Kinlaw
DE/DT, South Carolina
HT: 6051v |  WT: 324v |  40: 5.00
Fourth year senior from Charleston, South Carolina. Started for three years at South Carolina after spending his freshman year Jones County Junior College. The tool set is among the best in the class at the position and there is enough tape to confirm he is much more than a blank slate with potential. Kinlaw has shown the ability to take over games from the middle with his ability to create a new line of scrimmage and close in on the action with violence, power, and speed. There are several technique-based parts to his game that need work and consistency, but he is very coachable and will make a difference early even while he tries to learn the game.Arm: 34 7/8, Hand: 10 1/2.

10. Cleveland Browns
Andrew Thomas*
LOT  , Georgia
HT: 6051v |  WT: 315v |  40: 5.30
Even if Trent Williams decides to rejoin new line coach Bill Callahan in Cleveland, the Browns need another tackle. Thomas is a junior with three years starting experience from Lithonia, GA. Played two years at left tackle and one year at right tackle as a freshman. One of the things Thomas does best is stay between the defender and his quarterback. Has a sturdy lower body and thick bubble. A big guy who can bend. Flashes an explosive punch on inside blitzers. Demonstrates his ability to regain body control and balance. Good use of hands and placement on the defender’s breast plate. Has been consistent over his career from snap to finish. Plays with good hand and foot quickness. Can bend and play in a good football position. A competitor who stays square with the ability to shadow the rusher. Easy light feet. Can anchor a bull rush. Good effort and hustle to make a second block. Arm 36 1/8″, Hand 10 1/4″

11. New York Jets
Mekhi Becton*
OT  , Louisville
HT: 6073v |  WT: 364v |  40: 5.50
The Jets may go in another direction as Becton is a need reach at this point. Junior entry and three year starter from Highland Springs, Virginia. First team All ACC in 2019 as the team’s starting left tackle. Becton has played on both sides of the line and could project to either in the NFL. His game very much depends on the elite length and upper body explosion that can take over a one on one battle right away. Becton is rare physical force that gets movement at both the point of attack and in space the second he comes in contact with the defender. His issues are partially technique-based which, but there are also movement issues. It can be hard for a player at his height to adjust with balance and precision in pass protection. His sometimes-inaccurate hands aren’t backed up by other physical attributes and techniques which gives him a rather large buyer-beware label. He turns 21 just days prior to the draft. Flashes a little Trent Brown or Tre Thomas in his game .ARM: 35 5/8″,Hand: 10 3/4″

12. Las Vegas Raiders
Jerry Jeudy*
WR  , Alabama
HT: 6010v |  WT: 193v |  40: 4.46v
Junior from Deerfield Beach, FL. A second year starter who has emerged from a talented group of pass catchers. Loose-hipped and light-footed athlete who plays faster than he times because of his efficient lower body mechanics and overall skill set. Jeudy can create separation both as a route runner and ball carrier. He carries gifted athleticism off the snap, showing pro-caliber routes. The stop-and-go ability with the ball in his hands forces missed contact. He is a natural pass catcher that looks the ball into his hands consistently, whether it is underneath or deep. He is a team player who puts effort into downfield blocking . Everything about his game is NFL-ready week one.Hand 91/2″ Arm 32 1/8″

13. Indianapolis Colts
CeeDee Lamb*
WR  , Oklahoma
HT: 6015v |  WT: 198v |  40: 4.45
Junior from Richmond, TX who has been starting since his freshman season. He possesses a wiry, borderline skinny frame but plays like one of the toughest guys on the field. He brings elite ball skills to the table, as he tracks the ball no matter where it is exceptionally well with excellent timing, balance, and control. He reaches the ball at full extension and will come down with complete awareness of where he is in relation to the boundaries. Lamb already specializes in tip-toeing his feet in bounds like a ballerina and shows the easy, natural hands. He is as competitive as it gets after the catch and as a blocker. He needs to improve his playing strength against more physical defensive backs. Hand: 9 1/4″ Arm: 32 1/4″

14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Jedrick Wills Jr *
ROT  , Alabama
HT: 6042v |  WT: 314v |  40: 5.30
Junior entry from Lexington, Kentucky. A two-year starter at right tackle that earned 1st Team All SEC and 2nd Team All American honors in 2019. Willis was the most physical blocker on the Crimson Tide offensive line but also turned heads with his quality, consistent performance as a pass blocker. It can be hard to locate a true dent in his armor outside of the fact he can get out-reached by longer defenders. His footwork and hands are as sure as it gets and he plays with an ever-present competitive streak that every team wants in the trenches. He has the look of a first-year starter that could move inside if the situation he is drafted in to doesn’t initially demand a new face at tackle.Arm: 34 1/4, Hand 10″

15. Denver Broncos
AJ Epenesa*
DE  , Iowa
HT: 6051v |  WT: 275v |  40: 5.00
Junior from Glen Carbon, IL . As big and strong as a man can come. A power player in every sense of the word. Not a quick twitch explosive edge player that flies up the field, but rather a powerful strong man who can push and squeeze the pocket but yet has subtle quickness and short area pop. What is so intriguing about Epenesa to NFL scouts is his size and power for an edge defender. He is an ascending player who is strong at the point of attack and uses his arms and hands to control the blocker. He has mobility and speed to string out and pursue to the sidelines. He is a hard hitting physical talent that is thick and stout. Stays on his feet although he must work to bend to ward off low cut blocks. A quality control scout could put together an NFL eye popping highlight film to showcase his career exploits. Not a finished product but has the talent to start on any defensive front.Arm: 34 1/2″, Hand: 10 1/8 ”

16. Atlanta Falcons
K’Lavon Chaisson*
OLB  , LSU
HT: 6030v |  WT: 254v |  40: 4.75
Redshirt sophomore entry. Two year starter from Houston, Texas. After a 5-star recruit caliber high school career, Chaisson started week one of his true freshman season . He showed off plenty of upside that year but a torn ACL week one of his sophomore season caused him to miss the year. He had to fight through an ankle injury early in 2019, thus his experience as he enters the league is limited. With that said, Chaisson’s movement skills and leverage jump off the screen. He is a feisty, explosive straight line edge rusher. His body still has a lot of filling out to do, but nobody will question this kids work ethic. He was a permanent team captain as a true junior that wore the heralded #18 jersey for the National Champion Tigers. All the top tackles are off the board. One of 2 QBs went at 5, Fins take an explosive top front playmaker in Chaisson. Arm 32 1/4 “, 9 7/8″

17. Dallas Cowboys
Grant Delpit*
S  , LSU
HT: 6024v |  WT: 213v |  40: 4.45
Three year starter from Houston, TX. In 2018 had 74 tackles including five sacks. He also added nine pass breakups, five interceptions, a forced fumble, and a recovery. Excellent size for the position. Delpit is used in a variety of coverage in multiple spots. Teams have to account for where he is on the field. Excels in run support with near perfect tackling ability. A missed tackle is rare before being somewhat hobbled in 2019 with an ankle injury. Makes quick adjustments in space and gathers and finishes tackles. Consistently drops ball carriers in their tracks. Outstanding range in pursuit and coverage. Around the ball a lot. Fluid in transition flipping his hips in deep coverage or driving on the throw. Has match-up skill and can cover a slot receiver up the field. Smart defender with vision to see the quarterback and receivers in zone coverage. Positions well versus multiple routes in a zone. Gets his hands to the catch point and can out-fight a receiver for the ball. Effective blitzing from inside or outside with good anticipation at the snap. His skill will be coveted by an NFL team in any scheme. Hand 9 1/8″

18. Miami Dolphins  f/Pittsburgh
Austin Jackson*
OT  , USC
HT: 6047v |  WT: 322v |  40: 5.07v
Junior entry. Two year starter from Phoenix, Arizona. Grandson of Melvin Jackson, a five-year NFL lineman. First team All Pac 12 in 2019. Jackson has the tools and initial movement off the snap with an aggressive playing style and hustle that will get coaches excited about working with him. He can create solid torque and pop off the ball and he has enough athletic ability to play outside. However a deeper look in to his game and there are several warts that absolutely need to be ironed out. ARM: 34 1/4″, Hand: 10 1/4”

19. Las Vegas Raiders  f/Chicago
Kenneth Murray*
IB  , Oklahoma
HT: 6024v |  WT: 238v |  40: 4.65
Junior entry. Three year starter from Missouri City, Texas. Murray burst on to the scene in 2017, winning the Big 12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year Award. He was a part of the All-Big 12 team all three years and ended his career as an All American. He started all 42 games of his career and has been the heartbeat to the defense. Murray has been touted for both his leadership and play by coaches and opponents alike. He is the kind of player that any team can stick in to the middle of their defense and know they have a true three down player that will make others around him better. Murray has the physical tools and mental acuity to be a star in the middle. Arm 32 3/4 “, Hand 9 1/2 ”

20. Jacksonville Jaguars  f/Rams
CJ Henderson
CB  , Florida
HT: 6007v |  WT: 204v |  40: 4.48
Junior entry from Miami, Florida. A three-year starter that earned All SEC honors all three seasons, including a first team honor in 2019. Henderson brings elite triangle numbers to the table, perhaps best in the class. He has the best combination of height, weight, speed, and leaping ability. However his greatest trait trumps all of those numbers, and it is the ability to stick to a receiver’s hip pocket with a rare combination of quickness, agility, and body control. Henderson makes his elite burst and acceleration look smooth and easy. He has the kind of speed that can stick to the NFL’s fastest deep threats but also the quickness to stick to the NFL’s shiftiest slot receivers. His poor tackling and tendency to avoid contact will hurt his team at times, but for what a corner first asked to do, cover the receiver, it is hard to find someone better than Henderson. ARM: 31 5/8″, 9″ Hand.

21. Philadelphia Eagles
Henry Ruggs III*
WR  , Alabama
HT: 5110v |  WT: 188v |  40: 4.27v
We can’t see this speedster lasting until 21 but stranger things have happened. Junior from Montgomery, AL. Two year starter with experience as a receiver, ball carrier, and special teams’ standout. Ruggs’ game begins with speed, an elite level of speed that is already being viewed as maybe the fastest in the country. Alabama coaches labeled him the most competitive player on the squad and it shows as a gunner on special teams. Ruggs has improved as a route runner to the point where he can be counted on to separate as an underneath route runner with his cut-and-go burst. If he does find some space, it’s over. His acceleration and stride-speed is that special. There are still some rough spots to his skill set as a pass catcher but Ruggs easily has the ability to be an elite game breaker at the next level. Speedster gives Carson Wentz a threat to open up the underneath routes for big receivers. Hand 10 1/8″

22. Buffalo Bills
Denzel Mims
WR  , Baylor
HT: 6027v |  WT: 207v |  40: 4.38v
Another option is cold weather player Chase Claypool. A huge wide receiver/chess piece. Mims is a senior entry from Daingerfield, Texas. Three year starter that earned All Big 12 honors in both 2017 and 2019. The former high school basketball and track star had a bit of a back and forth career at Baylor because of the quality around him, but his 2019 cemented him as one of the top receivers in the class. Mims has a classic wide receiver build with wiry strong length and a defender’s mentality. He is incredibly physical and tough but also shows a blend of finesse and pure speed ARM: 33 7/8 ” Hand: 9 3/8″

23. New England Patriots
Yetur Gross-Matos*
Edge , Penn State
HT: 6050v |  WT: 266v |  40: 4.75
Junior entry. Two year starter from Spotsylvania, Virginia. When it comes to long term upside and tools, Gross-Matos can be considered one of the top defenders in the entire class. He has the height, length, and speed combination that is considered rare. He recorded 35 TFL and 17.5 sacks over his two seasons as a starter and has more than enough tape to prove he can get the job done early in his career. Possesses the ideal body of today’s edge rusher with room to add bulk. Plays with a low pad level and more than enough flexibility from is ankles and knees. Thick lower half, bubble butt and big calves. Top tier speed for the position. Pursues the ball well and will play through the whistle. Has the tool set to work with and develop that doesn’t come around often. There are issues with his game, most notably when it comes to power and inside run defense, but Gross-Matos has a top shelf toolbox that may just need some time and strength development.
Arm: 34 7/8, Hand: 9 3/4″

24. New Orleans Saints
Xavier McKinney*
S  , Alabama
HT: 6003v |  WT: 201v |  40: 4.47
Two year starter from Roswell, GA. Versatile prospect with experience in the box, as a slot corner and deep safety. Possesses outstanding footwork with quick pedal and stop and start quickness. Sudden to drive on the ball in the air. Gets to a lot of balls and hits at the catch. Solid ball skills getting his hands to the catch point. Has match-up ability and can play off or press. Mirrors route breaks and quickly recovers if separated. Shows the range to cover deep zones and vision to see multiple threats and the quarterback. Has some inconsistency in run support and tackling. Coming from deep alignment will take a bad angle at times . He usually wraps up, but will allow yards after contact. He generally demonstrates outstanding play and has the upside of an elite safety. A receiver like Henry Ruggs III, front 7 playmaker K’Lavon Chaisson* or CB CJ Henderson is also in the mix for the Cowboys.Arm 30 7/8″, Hand 8 5/8″

25. Minnesota Vikings  f/LAR
Kristian Fulton
CB  , LSU
HT: 5115v |  WT: 197v |  40: 4.45
Two year starter from New Orleans, LA. Has played press man, off man, hard corner, and deep outside zone coverage. Solid techniques with excellent footwork. Physical in press and can be disruptive with an off-hand jam at the line. Quick fluid pedal when off and rarely wastes movement. As a hard corner flashes re-route skill. Sudden in transition with a closing burst breaking on the ball. Shows mirror ability reacting to route breaks and can recover if out of position. Has ball skills with a knack to get his hand into the catch point. Fluid to flip his hips to close voids and react to route breaks in zone. Has the speed to stay in phase on vertical routes. In press will give up leverage on a stutter move at times. Shows some vulnerability to a double move but recovers so well he rarely gets burned. Willing tackler. He is still developing but has all the tools necessary to be an elite NFL corner. ARM: 30 5/8″, Hand: 9 1/8″

26. Miami Dolphins  f/Houston
Trevon Diggs
CB  , Alabama
HT: 6013v |  WT: 205v |  40: 4.47
Two year starter from Gaithersburg, MD and brother to the Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Versatile athlete who saw action as a wide receiver, defensive back, and returner his freshman year. Took on a full-time role on defense and was a solid return man as a sophomore. Has played press man, press and bail, off man, and off zone using outside and inside technique based on coverage. Physical in press with a two hand or off hand jam but can also press and react. Mirrors cuts in press but occasionally will take a wrong turn and get separated. Somewhat vulnerable to double moves in off man. Zone aware with the ability to see multiple threats and react quickly on the throw. Has range in zone coverage. Receiver-like ball skill shows as he can find the ball and get to the high point. Willing tackler but comes in high and rarely gathers. Still a work in progress in some areas, but size and skill level get him into the first round. ARM: 32 3/4, Hand: 9 3/8″

27. Seattle Seahawks
Marlon Davidson
DE/DT, Auburn
HT: 6033v |  WT: 303v |  40: 4.95
Senior entry from, Greenville, Alabama. A rare four year starter for the Tigers. Davidson may not be an ideal fit for a cut and dry scheme, but with the amount of teams looking for a versatile puzzle piece in relation to their looks, Davidson can be a key target. He is a tweener that can play multiple positions and flashes standout strength . Davidson is a powerful force that can create mismatches and do some of the dirty work to keep others clean and unoccupied. A reliable and blue collar player that every good defense needs.Arm: 33″, Hand 10″

28. Baltimore Ravens
Terrell Lewis*
DE/OB, Alabama
HT: 6052v |  WT: 252v |  40: 4.75
With Murrary off the board and Queen with question marks, the Ravens are betting on the upside with Lewis if they lose Judon in free agency. Up and down career. An athlete with talent.Fourth year junior entry from Washington, D.C. A one year starter. 2nd Team All SEC in 2019. Lewis was a 5-star recruit out of high school that began his career strong as a rotational edge rusher, ended his career strong finishing second on the team with 11.5 TFL and leading the team with 14 pressures, but missed a combined 25 games over the two middle years with different injuries. He is a tools-rich, versatile athlete that can make things happen from a standup outside linebacker position, ARMS : 33 7/8″ Hand 9 7/8″ VJ 37 ” and BJ 10-4.

29. Tennessee Titans
JK Dobbins
RB  , Ohio State
HT: 5094v |  WT: 209v |  40: 4.45e
The Titans may be in a contract battle with Henry, if not & Henry signs Dobbins will be a good rotation back. The Titans may try to pick up an edge rusher, another O-linemen or CB.: Junior entry. Dobbins is a three year starter from La Grange, Texas. Dobbins led the Buckeyes in rushing all three years on campus including 2,000 yard, 2nd Team All American season in 2019. Dobbins has been a hit on campus from the start and left Ohio State as their second all time leading rusher after just three years of service. He has the ideal body type and running style of a every down back in the NFL with a diverse skill set and team-mentality.

30. Green Bay Packers
Justin Jefferson
WR  , LSU
HT: 6012v |  WT: 202v |  40: 4.42v
Junior entry from St. Rose, La. A two year starter that earned 2nd Team All SEC honors in 2019. A featured receiver for each of the past two years who’s 18 touchdowns in 2019 were second in the nation only to teammate Ja’Marr Chase. Jefferson played primarily out of the slot in 2019 and because of his crisp route running and smooth ball skills, it will likely be his ideal spot in the NFL. He has great twitch and transition for a player with his length and he will create unique opportunities in that role at the next level. He has excellent long speed and playing strength. He proved his ability to impact a game short and deep and will be a NFL-ready receiver right away.
Arm:33′” Hand: 9 1/8″

31. San Francisco 49ers
Kyle Dugger
S  , Lenoir-Rhyne
HT: 6007v |  WT: 217v |  40: 4.45
Sixth year senior entry from Decatur, Georgia. A two time 1st Team All South Athletic Conference honoree and one time 2nd Team. Winner of the 2019 Cliff Harris Award, given to the best defensive player in Division II despite playing in an injury shortened season (hand). Dugger has the attractive tool set and dominant-level play at a lower level of college football to make him a credible draft prospect. He looked like a man among boys and that was evident athletically whenever he got the ball in his hands. He was just too big and fast, thus why he was an All American punt returner, a spot he netted 6 touchdowns. As good as Dugger looks on paper, he will be a 24 year old rookie, has had a couple durability issues, and is making an enormous jump on competition and speed. His role should be limited early but the upside could be Pro Bowl-caliber.
Senior Bowl notes: Showed some versatility playing the short and deep zones. Quick in flat coverage breaking on short throws and chasing. Made plays in space. Showed range over the top and solid ball reactions. Tracked well moving downhill in run support. .ARM: 32 7/8″, Hand 10 3/8″

32. Kansas City Chiefs
AJ Terrell
CB  , Clemson
HT: 6011v |  WT: 195v |  40: 4.42v
The Chiefs can simply take the best player available but would like a front 7 defender,CB, WR or maybe a stud RB. 5. Terrell, A. J. Clemson 6011, 188
Two year starter from Atlanta, GA.Ideal size for the position. Uses variety of technique including press, press and bail and off. Outstanding footwork with no wasted movement. Mirrors cuts and can cut off route breaks. Disrupts routes with jam and is quick to turn and run on a vertical route. Rarely gives up leverage. Normally stays in phase up the field. Transitions are fluid and he is sudden to break on throws in front of him. Plays zone coverage well with good vision and ability to recognize multiple routes in a zone. Has ball skills and can get his hands into the catch point. Willing tackler but is inconsistent making plays. Will miss at times and can get locked up on a block and out of position. Occasionally will get beaten on a route break by looking at the quarterback in man. Due to his quickness breaking on the short throw has been vulnerable to a hitch and go. Still developing but has the length and ball skills NFL teams covet.

“Chargers–When–If–Why–Draft a QB”

-0-

They knew this day was coming.
They did nothing about it.
Now the time has arrived and they have to replace him.

Him being Philip Rivers, who gave the Chargers 14-tremendous years of service as quarterback.

His stay is over because of age, a high salary cap number, a bit of a declining performance and a coach who wants a different type of quarterback in a changing NFL world.

Rivers is the Indianapolis Colts solution to their quarterback problems, with Andrew Luck’s sudden retirement because of injuries.

The Chargers are now faced with a real problem, having to do something, and the only benefit of last year’s lousy (5-11) season is the very high draft pick they will have, sixth, in what appears to be a quarterback heavy opening round.

But there are issues though, because it now appears, 48-hours before the start of this draft, that the top two sure-fire QBs will be off the board, Joe Burrow of LSU and Justin Herbert of Oregon.

It leaves the Bolts with the opportunity to take Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, but he brings with him a resume of injuries and surgeries.

The fractured and dislocated hip surgery; operations on both ankles; a surgical procedure for a damaged finger, and two wrist injuries on top of that.  The stat sheet reads 3-years, 4-surgeries, 5-injuries.

There will be other QBs available, likely development guys like Utah State’s Jordan Love, Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts, Washington’s Jacob Eason.  But who knows if they will be there by the time the Chargers pick at #37.

The great debate in the Chargers War Room would be ‘risk-vs-reward’ if it has to be Tua.

The Chargers front office knew they would be replacing Rivers one day, much like past front office leadership knew they would have to replace Dan Fouts.  The GM group that included Johnny Sanders and Steve Ortmayer never solved the issues, and there were bad years ahead till Bobby Beathard traded for Stan Humphries.

They had chances in recent drafts to draft for the future, and didn’t.

Tom Telesco’s draft ledgers has been pretty decent repairing the mess he inherited from the tailed of the AJ Smith regime.

But he also bypassed potential stars when he should have considered adding to the Rivers-led position.

How would Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson have looked in a Lightning Bolt helmet?

Do you think Russell Wilson would have made a different once the landscape of how to play quarterback in the new look NFL was taking part?

Telesco could have drafted any of those three, and he didn’t.  Now he is facing an enormous challenge and gamble.  He has openly praised journeyman Tyrod Taylor, who had starting opportunities in Buffalo-Baltimore and Cleveland, and was allowed to walk from the Bills-Ravens-Browns.

A look back at what could have happened, but didn’t.

2019..Drew Lock-Missouri…bypassed by the Bolts who took DT-Jerry Tillery.  Lock went (5-1) as a starter down the stretch in Denver.

2018..No quality QBs were available as the Chargers took potential star safety Derwin James.

2017..Patrick Mahomes-Texas Tech and Deshaun Watson-Clemson were both available early in the first round.  The Chargers went for WR-Mike Williams instead, a rock solid choice.  But you know, I know, and the Chargers front office knows what Mahomes-Watson have turned into.

2016..It was the Joey Boss draft with a very high pick.  The only QB available turned out too be a bust in Paxton Lynch-Memphis, now out of the NFL, and a failed Denver draft pick.

2015..Melvin Gordon was the choice and a quality player in a QB-thin year where only journeyman Sean Mannion was available when the Bolts picked.

2014..Teddy Bridgewater-Louisville…Derek Carr-Fresno State have played well in the NFL, maybe not superstar status, but rock solid.  Telesco bypassed them and went for the medical risk CB-Jason Verrett.

2013..EJ Manuel-Florida State-Geno Smith-West Virginia..So much was expected, so little happened with those high picks….Systems didn’t fit…Work ethic wasn’t there..Intelligence was lacking…both failed.  The Bolts got mixed results from OG-DJ Fluker who has since moved on to 3-other teams.

2012..Russell Wilson-Minnesota…a 3-year starter who might have been the first piece of the puzzle as NFL teams discovered the RPO-run-pass-option offense could work.  Who would you rather have, Wilson or LB-Melvin Ingram?  Tough call, but you have to have QBs to win in this league.

2011..Colin Kaeperneck-Nevada…A fast rising star who got to the 49ers, did well, got hurt as the team fell apart.  He put together 3-really good years.  The Bolts got a lot of service time from DE-Corey Liuget.

So the Chargers get on the clock knowing they have to find an heir apparent to Rivers, and someone Tyrod Taylor can bridge to for the future.

If not this year, when?

Of course I could have said that in 2017…2014….2012.

I did…the Chargers didn’t.

“NFL-Draft–The Quarterbacks”

-0-

The draft boards are set, the chase for the blue chip quarterbacks is about to begin.

And though college football fans know the names, the clubs know where the strengths, weaknesses, and concerns lie.

Here’s a look at the top QB’s on the NFL Draft board heading to Thursday’s opening round.

JOE BURROW-LSU (6’4-216)…Exploded as second year starter for Tigers..(5,671P-60TD), a huge jump from his first year.  Rave reviews for ability to process new playbook going to shotgun-wide open-spread attack…Surrounded by great talent but made big plays regardless of opponent.  Adequate arm strength, very accuarate with big time mobility to run if need be..Cocky, strong, great football attitude-mentality…Coaches call him a ‘baller’.

TUA TAGOVAILOA-ALABAMA (6′-230)…Dynamic player with real durability questions now..Surrounded by tons of talent…finished career (87TD-11Int)….Pinpoint on all types of passes…makes a lot of great throws-ultra accurate…Instinctive-adapts to different systems..ultra competitive….Injuries dropping down the board…5-injuries-4 surgeries in 2-and-half seasons with Tide….Dislocated hip surgery-2-ankle injuries-2 wrist injuries-1 knee injury…Doctors say healthy but concern over ability to stay on the field and if hip deteriorates in years to come.  What type of QB will he be if he does not have Alabama-type playmakers with him…Laid back personality…but leader in huddle….Worked in off season with former NFL coach Ken Whisenhunt

JUSTIN HERBERT-OREGON (6’6-237)…Four year starter at Oregon…stayed in school extra year…has (4.05-GPA)….Student of game…Super Smart-Tough guy…Great pocket presence…can scramble…has cannon for arm and accurate…big-fast….Rythm passer-reads defenses-blitzes well..Showed he could handle changing head coaches-coordinators-over three years… Carried team that did not have firepower talent that LSU-Alabama had…(10,541Y-95TD-44 Games) in brilliant career….Tremendous Rose Bowl and then Senior Bowl outing…Not a dynamic personality-firebrand..but hits a lot of checkmarks on boxes..

JORDAN LOVE-UTAH STATE (6’4-223)…A really skilled athlete who has special (2018) season but tailed off in (2019)…..Was it him or was it them….Aggies had new head coach…he had 3-offensive coordinators in 3-years….went from (30TD-6Int) to (20TD-17Int) last year…but also had 9-new starters around him last season…Has run Air Raid and Pro Set offenses…forced alot of passes into coverage last year…Stock keeps going up and down…Some say 1st round…others see him falling out of top round….Probably a bit of a project…How much football does he really know?

JALEN HURTS-OKLAHOMA (6’2-219)…Rising up the board after strong season after transferring from Alabama to the Sooners (3,851APY-32TD-8 Int)….Career marks impressive running different systems at two schools (12,751APY-123TD)…Big time player who played well in big time games…Strong arm…Mobility…Durability made him impossible to defend in college…Has not had much responsibility at line of scrimmage-so learning curve coming there..Future ahead of him.

JACOB EASON-WASHINGTON (6’6-227)…Started 1-year at Georgia…1-year at Washington..Looks the part-big-strong (3,132-23TD-8Int) with up and down Huskies team…Reputation as fiery but also a party guy..Elite arm-makes all the throws-great mechanics…Good pocket presence but doesn’t move pocket well…Might be a gem down road.

JAKE FROMM-GEORGIA (6’1-219)…3-year starter finished solid but not spectacular season (2,960-24TD-5Int) year with offense that ran ball a lot..Arm strength is question for deep balls…but very accurate…strong team leader…more touch-finesse passer…Manages games well-can he win games at NFL level?

Have at it boys…Thursday will be Quarterback Day at the Draft.
