“PADRES OWNERSHIP-CIVIL WAR”
============

The successes of a couple of pennant races, an NLCS series, a playoff win over the Dodgers, and the excitement of last year, are about to be washed away.

The Seidler family is embroiled in a hostile take over of the Seidler trust, a vicious 97-page lawsuit, filed by Peter Seidler’s widow against 2-of his brothers, charging they illegally have tried to remove her from decision making power despite the fact she owns majority control of 25% of the team.

At issue also is the Control Person who represents the team in the business of baseball with MLB.

John Seidler, who was named to take over the control position has yet to be approved.

In the front office, MLB execs say the team has been paralyzed financially, unable to solve its contract issues with star players, unable to take on salary, and yet to configure a way to keep its core without raising the payroll from last year’s 170M-payrolll.

A side issues is money owed to top hitter Luis Arraez, starting pitchers Dylan Cease and Michael King, and the hole behind home plate and in left field.  Another issue is the team debt limit they exceeded two years running.

Seidler Equity has run the team since the passing of Peter Seidler in November of 2023.  Record attendance, record revenue, even with the loss of some of its TV Revenue with the Bally Spors bankruptcy.  A quiet fear, Seidler Equity wants to pocket the money, to wipe out the debt of the money GM-AJ Preller burned thru in 7-years, and not increase the payroll.

The Seidler mode of operation has yet to put the Padres into the World Series, has nearly slayed the dragon that is Dodgers baseball, has made Petco Park a destination point.  But now we are faced with the proposition that Seidler equity may be thinking of selling, since the value is at an all time high (2B).

Don’t think we want to see the Seidler leadership revert back to the awful era of Tom Werner and the Terrible 15-group that mandated Fire Sales.
It’s a problem, that is now an ugly Family lawsuit in a Texas court room case.

A deeper dive into the story, courtesy of Front Office Sports website and the Sportico Business site..

===========
The ownership transition of the Padres, recently thought to be a straightforward process, is now anything but, and threatens to heavily alter the team’s immediate future.

Two weeks after John Seidler, the older brother of late Padres owner Peter Seidler, was set to become the team’s new designated control executive, Peter’s widow, Sheel, has filed a lawsuit that, among several other claims, alleges two other brothers-in-law have wrongly “schemed to solidify their control of the Padres” and have “falsely cast themselves as Peter’s true heirs.”

The 97-page action against two other Seidler brothers, Matt and Bob—filed in probate court in Travis County, Texas—alleges multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, fraud, and gross negligence, as well as racism against Sheel Seidler, who is of Indian descent. In particular, she alleges several members of the extended Seidler family engaged “in multiple racist, profane, and hateful communications directed at” her because of her ethnicity.

“For example, in a message on Oct. 15, 2024, the same day Matt unceremoniously told Sheel that she lacked ‘the experience, skills, and financial acumen necessary’ to be named Padres control person, [Bob’s wife] Alecia (copying Bob) sent an email that perfectly encapsulated the Seidler family’s view of Sheel: ‘Do you really think this family would work for your f***ing purple ass? You are delusional!’” the lawsuit reads in part.

Matt and Bob Seidler are the named defendants, as they are the executor and former executor, respectively, of the estate of Peter, who died in November 2023. Sheel claims it was Peter’s dying wish for her to take over the club, and eventually their three children.

In a subsequent social-media statement, Sheel called the lawsuit “a very last resort.”

“I do not wish to litigate this matter in public, but rest assured I will do what it takes to protect my children, Peter’s legacy, and this remarkable ball club,” she said. “I look forward to a quick resolution so that we can—together—continue the work ahead.”

The Seider trust said Sheel’s action and the claims within it are “entirely without merit.”

“In 2020, in connection with Peter’s appointment as [Padres] control person, Sheel agreed in a sworn document that she had no right to be or designate the control person, and that she would not interfere with the designated control person,” the trust said in a statement.

Team Questions
The dispute—though somewhat common to several other family disputes over the years in pro team ownership—arrives at an already delicate time for the Padres.

A defining note of Peter Seidler’s ownership was the Padres’ push to boost payroll and challenge the Dodgers, winners of 11 of the last 12 National League West division titles and the 2024 World Series champions. In 2023, Peter Seidler’s final season, San Diego’s payroll reached $282.8 million, the third highest in MLB and more than twice the level of 2019—the last full season before he took control of the club in late 2020.

After his death, however, the club’s spending dropped precipitously to $184.9 million in 2024, MLB’s 15th highest. During this transition period, the team also traded away Juan Soto, who played one season with the Yankees before signing a record-setting $765 million deal with the Mets. Despite the cuts, the Padres reached the NL Division Series, falling to the Dodgers in five games.

In the lawsuit, Sheel Seidler suggests a potentially more dire outcome for the franchise under John.

“Matt’s efforts to promote his brother John as control person and to block Sheel may well be part of his efforts to sell, and perhaps relocate, the team, over Sheel’s strident objections,” the lawsuit reads in part.

“NFL-BLACK MONDAY-SPILLS INTO TUESDAY”
=========

The expected in the NFL-turned into the unexpected as the tidal wave of firings went from season ending Sunday to Black Monday and more to come on Tuesday.

A quick look at what happened and what happens next.

GIANTS..Awful season, awful player personnel decisions,but the Mara Family elected to retain GM-Joe Schoen and Coach Brian Daboll.  They have to find a QB with their top pick and have to restock the roster.  One years to rally the team and save their jobs.

COWBOYS..No determination on Mike McCarthy, but reports he might get just a 1-year offer to stay.  But that may change now that the Bears want to interview him next week.  if Jerry Jones makes a change, Kliff Kingsbury-ex Arizona may be waiting in the wings.

RAIDERS..Decision coming on noisy Antonio Pierce, who talks a good game, has the players support but went (4-13) and feuded with GM-Tom Telesco on draft choices, the QB mess, and the refusal to trade up to get Jayden Daniels last April.  If he goes, it would mean Mark Davis is looking at a 6th different head coach in 12-years.  Not alot of continuity is there?

BEARS..Will interview every hot coordinator there is, starting with Detroit’s Ben Johnson thru the defensive gurus out there Vance Joseph-Anthony Weaver.  No mention of the aging Pete Carroll being on their list though.

JETS..What a circus.this is becoming.  Already met with Mike Vrabel-Brian Flores, will meet with loudmouth Rex Ryan, and not a long list of hot coordinators including Arthur Smith-Bob Slowik-Joe Brady and a host of defensive guys.

PATRIOTS…If not Mike Vrable or Brian Flores, then who?  They want leadership and culture fix.  But maybe an offensive mind like Ben Johnson or a war veteran like Mike McCarthy?

SAINTS..A surprise name, ex Stanford coach David Shaw, and a guy who wants back in, but would you touch Jon Gruden?

JAGUARS..This may be a slam dunk, Buccaneers bright light offensive guy Liam Cohen.

BROWNS..Fired their Off Coor and OL coach
BENGALS..Axed 4-assistants led by their Def Coord.

We’re not done yet, just waiting to see who jumps off when the music stops playing, and who winds up where?

That was an eventful final weeked in the NFL.  Candid comments what I saw.

CHARGERS-RAIDERS…Dominant day from Justin Herbert, (346Y).. a spectacular Sunday from WR-Quinton Johnston (13R)..and overwhelming offensive day (474Y), but it was against the NFL’s black hole franchise the Raiders.  Next week, at Houston, the playoffs begin, and the Bolts must prove themselves against real people.  Again, they have beaten only 1-team with a winning record this year, the Broncos.  Call me a doubter.  Empty season is they lose a playoff game.  The Raiders should bulldoze everything.

VIKINGS-LIONS..Two really good teams, felt like a playoff game.  They might meet again the-playoffs.  What a season for 2-QBs other teams dumped.  Fun year watching Jared Goff become a star and Sam Darnold bouncing back from oblivion.  Detroit hasn’t had a week off since Week 5-of the season.  This should do wonders for them.

CHIEFS-BRONCOS…KC sat virtually everyone, Bo Nix went wild (26-29) and 4-TDs.  The prize, Denver goes to Buffalo.  Like I said weeks ago, the give away loss to the Chargers would haunt them, the Broncos may have won but they lost in the playoff matchup..

PACKERS-BEARS..Tough loss, tough injuries to QB-Jordan Love and WR-Christian Watson.

RAVENS-BROWNS..Miserable ending in Cleveland (3-14)..Fans wish they could fire owner Jim Haslam.  Nice QB mess too.  Baltimore-what a year, Lamar Jackson-Derrick Henry and next week they face the Steelers, again.

BENGALS-STEELERS..Cruel finish for Joe Burrow, who put up MVP-stats, enroute to an (8-4) finish.  This missed season is on ownership for failing to put the right players around Burrow.  The Steelers, that’s 4-losses in a row and the fans and media are not happy.

RAMS-SEATTLE..Home field secured-everyone gets a break, and now next week what a playoff game against the NFC-North warrior-Minnesota who did not win the division..

BUCS-SAINTS…3-second half scoring drives and 2-more TDs from Baker Mayfield, and onto the playoffs.

CAROLINA-ATLANTA..An impressive day again for young QB-Bryce Young, playing much better after getting benched.  Pretty competitive day for young Falcons QB-Michael Penix.

WASHINGTON-DALLAS..The Commanders starters rested.  Dallas with so many injuries finishes (7-10) but it might not cost the coach his job.

HOUSTON-TITANS…An up and down second half of the schedule for the Texans, but they get the Chargers at home next weekend.

COLTS-JAGUARS..Ugly finish to  the season.  Wait to see which of these two teams make coaching changes.

BILLS-PATRIOTS..The Bills sat starters, the Pats , with a backup QB, won, then Jared Mayo lost his job.

EAGLES-GIANTS..Philly is ready for their wildcard game.  The Giants ready themselves for heads to get chopped off.

JETS-MIAMI..Aaron Rodgers gets to the magical 500-TD club, but it is a lost season.  Empty seasons wrecked by injuries in Miami.

ARIZONA-49ERS…Lousy ending for both.  Too many injuries and divas in San Francisco (6-11).  Too little-too late for the Cardinals, second half collapse.

On we go to Black Monday and Wildcard Weekend

“NFL-FINAL WEEKEND”
========
Last minute thoughts on the last games on the NFL schedule:

CHARGERS-RAIDERS…Only the Raiders could screw this up.  With a chance to get either the first or second pick in the NFL draft, and a QB they so desperately need, this band of misfits wins two meaningless games.  They are now drafting 10th in the opening round.  They will get beat by the Bolts, the only question is how long Jim Harbaugh wants to expose QB-Justin Herbert in a game they don’t really need, because the Bolts playoffs begin next week.

RAMS-SEATTLE..Who saw this coming, a (9-2)  streak after a (1-4) start.  Matthew Stafford sits this weekend as will the top WRs and RB as the Rams get ready for their wildcard game.  Could be Geno Smith’s final game as Seahawks QB.

RAVENS-BROWNS…How bad is it in Cleveland, winter weather not withstanding? The Browns are starting their fourth different QB this year in street corner free agent Bailey Zappe.  Unless the owner shocks us, he is keeping his GM and Coach.  Though owner Jim Haslam has done strange things.

BENGALS-STEELERS..Joe Burrow (42TD-8Int) has dragged his Cincinnati team back into the playoff race.  Can they make it?  The Steelers have dropped 3-in a row and Mike Tomlin is not happy.  But they don’t have alot of game-changing offensive players.

VIKINGS-DETROIT..What a way to conclude action in the NFC-North Black & Blue Division.  Both are (14-2).  Sam Darnold (35TD)-vs-Jared Goff (36TD).

CHIEFS-BRONCOS..Patrick Mahomes and others sit.  Denver needs a win for a playoff berth.  Bo Nix wraps up a surprise rookie season.

TAMPA BAY-SAINTS..Baker Mayfield has (42TD) passes this year.  What a bounceback season.

FALCONS-CAROLINA..Michael Penix-vs-Bryce Young, both trying to grow as young QBs.

WASHINGTON-DALLAS..Jayden Daniels closes out a fabulous rookie season, with 35-TDs passing and running.  Dallas finishes a dreadful injury ravaged season.

GREEN BAY-CHICAGO..How many more sacks will Caleb Williams take?  He has (67) in a wretched Chicago season.

HOUSTON-TITANS…You just wonder if the Texans will get their mojo back in time for the wildcard playoffs.  Just not the same team anymore.

COLTS-JAGUARS…Injuries at QB have wrecked their seasons.  Wonder how many changes are coming in the front office or to the staffs of one or both teams?.

BILLS-PATRIOTS..The Pats keep Drake Maye as starting QB.  Josh Allen concluding an MVP type season.

EAGLES-GIANTS..Philly is resting Saquon Barkley, robbing him of the chance of putting his name in the all time NFL record book for single season rushing totals.  The Giants, a disaster everywhere. Black Monday cannot come quick enough.

MIAMI-JETS…Final game for Aaron Rodgers in New York?  Maybe.  Or might he be part of the solution with a new coaching staff-front office coming onboard?  Disappointing end to a badly battered Miami season.

NINERS-ARIZONA…Disappointments everywhere.  San Francisco wrecked by injury.  The Cardinals season off the rails by a mid season collapse.

Next stop..here come the NFL playoffs

“BOWL GAMES–SOMETHING TO REMEMBER”
==========

The New Year’s Holiday Bowl games will be something to remember, both good-bad and sad.

FIESTA BOWL…Penn State bludgeoned Boise State, but the Broncos showed great heart to keep rallying back.  But in the end, the Nittany Lions defense put a lid on star RB-Ashton Jeanty, and challenged BSU-QB-Maddux Madsen to beat them thru the air.  He was game but he did not have much of a run game, and Penn State moves onto the next round.  Their offense can be spotty and that might be a problem.  But the Lions defense roared.

PEACH BOWL…From a blowout to a bounceback.  Texas stunned Arizona State early, but the Sun Devils came back and nearly beat the Longhorns vaunted defense, driving the game into overtime before Texas hit a big pass play to end it all.  What a day for Devils RB-Cam Skattebo, some (254-APY), running, receiving and throwing a halfback option pass.  What grit ASU showed.  It was Texas that was on the ropes and nearly lost a game, they had a (24-8) lead in that went double overtime, before they won

ROSE BOWL..The Oregon Ducks got hit by a stun-gun of big plays and had no answers for the Buckeyes.  Brilliant freshman WR-Jeremiah Smith ran open all day.  QB-Will Howard was razor sharp.  The OSU defense got after Ducks QB-Dillon Gabriel, and the rest is history., a (41-21) trashing of the former #1 ranked and unbeaten Ducks.  A 500-yard outburst by the Buckeyes big play offense delivered a nationwide message.  OSU had big plays TDs of 42-43-45 and 66-yards in the beatdown.  The number one ranked and unbeaten guys wearing Green are gone from the playoffs.  They outscored alot of people all year long, the defense gave up lots of yards this past fall.  This time they could not recovery nor cope with all the weapons the Ryan Day-Chip Kelly led offense had in their tool box in Pasadena.

SUGAR BOWL…They will play on Thursday with a heavy heart, Georgia and Notre Dame, some 28-hours after the deadly terrorist attack in the French Quarter.  Just awful.  Guns, mental illness, terrorists who are radicalized.  And this from an Army veteran with grievances.  A sad commentary on a country with sick people, with access to guns, and a Congress that can only offer ‘Prayers and Thoughts’, rather than solutions to gun licensing, red flag screening and more.  Yeah, Prayers and thoughts this time…till the next time.
