“JACKIE ROBINSON-REMEMBERED”
=======

Baseball remembered greatness on April 15th..not so much the player, but more importantly the person.

Jackie Robinson-the Brooklyn Dodgers icon, broke the collar barrier, shattered myths, destroyed prejudice, and lived as full a baseball life as possible, considering it went from opening day 1947 to the final Dodgers home game in 1957.

His life derailed by racism, his career interrupted by World War II, his stardom fueled by the hate and revile coming from his own teammates, opposing players and managers, and to some degree by the fans still living in a segregated world they had known their whole life.

On Jackie Robinson Day, everyone wore #42.  His number is retired in every stadium in baseball.  He is displayed in so many ways at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

On this day, that day, in 1947 in Brooklyn, Jackie debuted vs the Boston Braves.  No mention of his color in the newspapeer stories on the UPI wire or in the newspapers in New York.  Just the rookie going (0-3) but walking and scoring a run

The headlines and all the rest of the stories would come later, in newspaper reports, in books, in movies and in Robinson’s influential post baseball career in business and politics.

His Hall of Fame plaque spoke volumes about talent, the (.311) career average, the hits, runs scored, stolen bases.  But as time passed the plaque meant even more, the doors he opened, what he represented too for an African American society..

And in Jackie’s own way, he refused to allow a white man to dictate his life, retiring when the Dodgers tried to trade him to the New York Giants for pitcher Dick Littlefield.

Robinson had so much to say about the road he travelled, and so did baseball people who walked with him, played against him, called him teammate, called him foe.

Comments from the Jackie Robinson Foundation of the man, and those around the man.

#42-always to be remembered, player and person.

Jackie Robinson-Quotes

“Plenty of times I wanted to haul off when somebody insulted me for the color of my skin, but I had to hold to myself. I knew I was kind of an experiment. The whole thing was bigger than me.”

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

“I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me. All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”

“Life is not a spectator sport. If you’re going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you’re wasting your life.”

“There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free.”

“During my life, I have had a few nightmares which happened to me while I was wide awake.”

“I’m grateful for all the breaks and honors and opportunities I’ve had, but I always believe I won’t have it made until the humblest Black kid in the most remote backwoods of America has it made.”

“Many people resented my impatience and honesty, but I never cared about acceptance as much as I cared about respect.”

“Negroes aren’t seeking anything which is not good for the nation as well as ourselves. In order for America to be 100% strong — economically, defensively and morally — we cannot afford the waste of having second- and third-class citizens.”

Baseball Comments on Jackie Robinson-Quotes

—”A credit to baseball and to America.”
Branch Rickey, general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers

—“To do what he did has got to be the most tremendous thing I’ve ever seen in sports.”
Pee Wee Reese, teammate of Jackie Robinson

—“The greatest moment in the history of baseball.”
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred

—“He gave the Black community a sense of hope, a sense of pride.”
John Lewis, civil rights leader

—”I didn’t know baseball from pingpong. But the point was that he had broken in. I grew inches that day. I puffed out my chest. A Black person had made it against the most tremendous odds.”
Archbishop Desmond Tutu

—“Jackie’s character was much more important than his batting average.”
Hank Aaron

—”Jackie Robinson made his country and you and me and all of us a shade more free.”
Roger Kahn, author of “The Boys of Summer”

—“There’s a direct line between Jackie Robinson and me.”
Former President Barack Obama

—“He knew he had to do well. He knew that the future of Blacks in baseball depended on it. The pressure was enormous, overwhelming, and unbearable at times. I don’t know how he held up. I know I never could have. He was the greatest competitor I have ever seen.”
Duke Snider, teammate

—”There was never a man in the game who could put mind and muscle together quicker than Jackie Robinson.”
Rickey

—”After the game, Jackie Robinson came into our clubhouse and shook my hand. He said, ‘You’re a helluva ballplayer and you’ve got a great future.’ I thought that was a classy gesture, one I wasn’t then capable of making. I was a bad loser. What meant even more was what Jackie told the press, ‘Mantle beat us. He was the difference between the two teams. They didn’t miss DiMaggio .’ I have to admit, I became a Jackie Robinson fan on the spot. And when I think of that World Series, his gesture is what comes to mind. Here was a player who had without doubt suffered more abuse and more taunts and more hatred than any player in the history of the game. And he had made a special effort to compliment and encourage a young white kid from Oklahoma.”
Mickey Mantle, on the 1952 World Series

—”Jackie, we’ve got no army. There’s virtually nobody on our side. No owner, no umpires, very few newspapermen. And I’m afraid that many fans may be hostile. We’ll be in a tough position. We can win only if we can convince the world that I am doing this because you’re a great ballplayer, and a fine gentleman.”
Rickey

—”Every time I look at my pocketbook, I see Jackie Robinson .”
Willie Mays

—”Give me five players like Robinson and a pitcher and I’ll beat any nine-man team in baseball.”
Dodgers manager Chuck Dressen

—”He led America by example. He reminded our people of what was right and he reminded them of what was wrong. I think it can be safely said today that Jackie Robinson made the United States a better nation.”
American League President Gene Budig

—”Jackie Robinson is the best I’ve seen. Robinson is the perfect blend of ballplayer. He has creativeness and imagination. Every move he makes from the minute he steps onto the field is designed to beat the other club. He’s constantly asking himself, at bat or on the bases, ‘what can I do to beat the other guy?’ That’s the kind of ballplayer that wins pennants.”
Fresco Thompson, assistant farm director for the Dodgers when Robinson played his first game

“NUMBERS-WE’VE GOT NUMBERS”
========
PADRES…What a fun start for the fans to experience at Petco Park..possibly the best start since their 1998 season.  Heading into the Cubs series:

..Padres starting pitchers with collective (3.55-ERA)
..Michael King (2.42)
..Nick Pivetta (1.59)
..Randy Vasquez (1.72)

..Padres relievers with a combined (0.41-ERA)..that’s right
..Padres bullen (45inn-2R-54K) so far from top 6-relievers.

DODGERS…Not in first place, not in second place, but in 3rd spot having lost 4-of-6 games.

Half the team is hitting below (.240)
Freddie Freeman (.211) has played in just 5-games so far this season.
Mookie Betts (.288) but not much power yet
Will Smith (.381) is best hitting catcher in baseball
Tommy Edman (6HR)-Teoscar Hernandez (5HR) are hitting
Shohei Ohtani (.277) as leadoff hitter, not getting many on base to drive in

Max Muncy-awful start (.176)
Mike Conforto (.224)
Andy Pages (.149)
Kike Hernandez (.114)
Miguel Rojas (.161)
Chris Taylor (.250)

The pitching staff has injuries and home run ball problems up top

Blake Snell is on the DL with shoulder issues..1-good start..1-bad start
Tyler Glasnow (4.85-ERA) plagued by walks and home run balls

Yosh Yamamoto-excellent across the board (1.23-ERA)
Dustin May-impressive coming off 2-surgeries (0.82)
Roki Sasaki after two tough starts-two strong outings (3.29)
Landon Knack (10.38) as a fill in starter.

It looks as if Tony Gonsolin will be here within a week, Shohei Ohtani in May, and Clayton Kershaw in June, so help is on the way.

A good three weeks for the Padres, but realize the teams they have beaten are a combined (32-47) so far.

A strange two weeks after the (8-0) start by the Dodgers, but lots of baseball to be played.

The surprise has to be the San Francisco Giants at (12-4).  Awaiting the flame to get lit by the Arizona Diamondbacks and that strong pitching staff.  Colorado, all you need to know, a (.102) batting average over 3-games, getting shutout 27-straight innings in San Diego, and now they are at Dodgers Stadium.

We’ve got stats.  Of course, it’s really early in a long baseball season.

“A MASTERS TO REMEMBER”
=========
The guy from Northern Island looks good in Green..the Green Jacket.
It took 11-years to get it done but Rory McIlroy has won at Augusta.

It was an emotional roller-coaster ride for McIlroy, the fans and a nationwide audience.
It took forever for him to get off the 18th green and get to Butler’s Cabin.

It was obvious McIlroy has become the ‘Fan’s Man’

What a ride.

Blowing an early final round lead with a double bogey on the first hole.
Forging his way back with a relentless run of birdies in the middle of the final round.

There was enormous irons play.
There was a troubled putter, in which he missed 5-short putts on the back nine.
There was a stunning 13th hole tee shot into the water.
Two shots into bunkers
Two shots he had to make from underneath or between trees.

But he rallied with some phenomenal iron shots when he needed perfection.

Justin Rose, the English veteran, was dazzling..reeling off 5-birdies in a 6-hole window, and then sinking an 30′ foot birdie putt on 18 to force the playoff hole.

He pulled away from Bryson DeChambeau who self destructed after getting the lead to start the final round on Sunday.  But he put two shots into the water, drawing double bogeys then fell apart with short putts.

Scottie Scheffler had spurts making shots, and chunks of holes where his game disappeared.  In one stretch over two days, he had 12-birdies and 10-bogeys.  It was not his vintage best.

But for McIlroy, you feltl a 1,000-pound weight fall off his shoulders when he sank the final putt in overtime.  He crashed to the green and wept and wept in tears.  Around him a gallery, some 30-rows deep, roared his name ‘Rory-Rory’.

The collection of golfers streamed to the edge of the green to hug McIlroy, including Irish teammates Shane Lowrey and others.  The adulation continued involving family members and Masters officials.

CBS’ wordsmith voice Jim Nantz was nearly speechless for 18-minutes as they let the nation watch and sense the outpouring of emotion on the course.

It was electric, well deserved, and an example of how great the modern day PGA Tour is, even if there no longer is a Tiger Woods or a Phil Mickelson.

McIlroy has won everything on the Tour, has rebuilt his game twice, has survived injuries and has become a global ambassador, but he had never gone to Butler Cabin for the victor’s ceremonies.

And in Dublin, Derry and Belfast, they will celebrate forever.

The guy from Northern Island looks good in Green.  Rory McIlroy = Masters Champion.

“MONDAY MADNESS”
=======
College basketball reaches its chaotic conclusion after what else, a chaotic semi-final in the Men’s Final Four.

But why should that be any different from what we have experienced all year long in college hoops.

Coaches quitting right before the season started (Tony Bennett), coach quitting at midseason (Jim Laranaga), players pouring into the Transfer Portal (2,105) in the first week it opened, while tourney games were going on.

And then we got to Saturday, the semifinals in San Antonio and the chaos no one could predict.

DUKE, most everyone’s favorite, losing a 14-point lead and watching Houston roar from behind to get back to the championship game for the 3rd time in school history.  A shocking outcome considering how great the Player of the Year Cooper Flagg (27P) has been during the tourney.  Stunning to see the Devils, and all that firepower, get one basket in 10-and-a half minutes at one point of the second half.  Amazing to see Duke’s inability to dictate its style and take over the game, breaking the other guys will.  What in the Coach K of the world happened?  Houston happened, that’s what.

HOUSTON should have worn a label on their jersey that read ‘relentless’ because that is why they won, and have won all year long.  It wasn’t just LG Cryer’s explosive (26P) night, or just his 6-three point bombs.  It was the entire roster.  The ones who got 42-rebounds, blocked 6-shots, had 6-steals, and reeled off scoring runs of (10-0) early and (9-0) late to wash away the deficits.  And for Kelvin Sampson, a chance to go where the Cougars have nearly gone in the past, in the Elvin Hayes and Phi Slamma Jamma eras, get to the finals, and now possibly win it.

FLORIDA has been building towards this, getting the chance to cut the nets down, because they have been cutting people down all year long.  Tell me there is anybody as slick, sleek, stylish as Walter Clayton Junior, who went off for (34P) in the Gators win.  And they too were face down in the swamp, down nine points, when Clayton kept running the floor and finding a way to finally get a shot, good or tough, and put it in.  And the Gators showed enormous depth and grit, making Auburn’s top player disappear.  The UF bigs are bangers who put people on the floor.  Onto the finals, on a mission, this group from Gainesville is on.

AUBURN could not find help for its spectacular big man Johni Broome and that’s why their season is over.  He went 13-minutes without a basket in the second half, and outside of the wild shooting of Chad Baker-Mazara, the Tigers just could not score much.  Broome is such a grinder and so gifted, and they did everything possible to run picks and back door passes, but he just could not convert close in with all that traffic around him.  And the refs had their hands full too, a very hard game to call ,with all these super athletes on the floor, playing above the rim, pressuring time after time.  At the end it was ugly, free throws, fouls, too many instant replay reviews, flagrant ones, alot of screaming and yelling.  In the end, Auburn got beat, got mugged, and got a taste of their own medicine, not handling what they had done to so many teams this year.

So we move on to the Monday Night Championship game.  My brackets are now bent, because Duke has gone away.  But the chaos on Saturday is no different that the chaos we have seen all season long.

First thought on the final game of the season….it’s Houston’s push-you-around defense vs Florida’s guards who want to push-it-up-the floor.

1-more night of screaming about anything-everything, in college basketball.
